The Chronic Pelvic Pain Study:

Chronic pelvic pain can affect your qualify of life. Doctors at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) invite you to take part in a exploratory study to find what causes PELVIC PAIN related to ENDOMETRIOSIS.

  • Tests how sex hormones, immune chemicals, stress hormones, and genes relate to how the nerve, muscle, and skeletal systems are involved with pelvic pain.
  • Tests how the nerve, muscle and skeletal system relate to pelvic pain and endometriosis.
  • Tests whether menses contain endometrial stem cells and how these are related to endometriosis
  • Includes surgical treatment for endometriosis and other causes of pain.
  • Offers women a "whole person" approach to managing endometriosis, including psychological, social, physical, and quality-of-life issues, providing referrals to other resources as needed.

Important sub study: Botulinum toxin (Botox) Injections

Location: The NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, outside of Washington, DC.

Cost: All study related care and surgery are provided at no cost.

You may be eligible to take part if you:

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 50
  • Have a 3-month history of pelvic pain or are healthy volunteers without pelvic pain
  • Have normal menstrual cycles (25–34 days)
  • Are not pregnant, or do not plan pregnancy in the next 6 months
  • Can come to NIH 2–3 times a week for 6 weeks for visits
