Step 1. Goals and objectives
The student will understand the maternal and fetal risk factors, complications, and management of twin pregnancies.
Objectives
The objectives for this module are:
- The student will understand the potential maternal and fetal complications associated with twin pregnancies
- The student will understand the appropriate antenatal fetal surveillance of twin pregnancies
- The student will understand the management of twin pregnancies and the associated complications of twin pregnancies
The incidence of multiple gestation pregnancies has increased to 3% of all births, but because of assisted reproductive technology, the incidence of higher order gestations has dramatically increased over the last decade: triplets – 116% and quadruplets – 149%. Understanding that maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality are significantly increased in multiple gestations, it is important as a health care provider to be familiar with the potential complications and management of the multiple gestation pregnancy.
