Goal and objectives

Goals
The student will understand the maternal and fetal consequences, methods and limitations of screening, and understand the management of diabetes in pregnancy.

Objectives
The objectives for this module are:

  • The student will understand the maternal and fetal consequences of diabetes in pregnancy.
  • The student will understand the methods and limitations of diabetes in pregnancy.
  • The student will understand the management of diabetes in pregnancy.

Case scenario (Case continued)

As you will recall from Diabetes in Pregnancy, Part I: Screening and diagnosis, our case patient, Sophie Kanulie, is a 38 y/o G8P7006 diagnosed with GDM by an abnormal 3-hour GTT shortly after 24 weeks.

She is begun on a no-added sweets diet, restricting total carbohydrates to 40% of total intake. Since her body-mass index (BMI) is approximately 37 kg/M2 (see Body Mass Index Nomogram), she is overweight for height, and therefore is restricted to 25 kilocalories per kg (pre-pregnant ideal weight).
