The U.S. government has made the fight against HIV/AIDS a top priority, not only for humanitarian reasons, but because the HIV/AIDS crisis threatens the prosperity, stability, and development of nations around the world. USAID has funded almost $6 billion since inception of its international HIV/AIDS program in 1986, more than any other public or private organization.

Pa, who is HIV-positive, is able to support herself and her two teenaged girls with the money she earns from her newly developed business. She started it with her sister and the help of a USAID-supported program called Positive Partnerships. The program helps to increase women’s access to income and productive resources by giving microcredit loans to HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals who pair up to form a business.

More than 25,000 scientists, advocates, and community and political leaders have gathered for the XVII International AIDS Conference in Mexico City to share knowledge, best practices, and strategies in the effort to fight AIDS. The theme of this year conference “Universal Action Now,” emphasizes the need for continued urgency and action on the part of all involved in the worldwide response to HIV/AIDS. Read more

Understanding USAID Support of the Emergency Plan
USAID is a key partner in the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the largest commitment ever by any nation for an international health initiative dedicated to a single disease – a five-year, $15 billion multifaceted approach to combating the disease in more than 120 countries around the world. Through the New Partners Initiative, the Emergency Plan is providing $200 million to faith and community-based organizations for HIV/AIDS prevention and care services. In addition, the Supply Chain Management System is an Emergency Plan funded project administered by USAID that is helping host nations increase the capacity for delivering essential lifesaving HIV/AIDS medicines and supplies. |

On May 21, 2003, President George W. Bush expanded his call to service and announced Volunteers for Prosperity, a volunteer-based initiative that matches the talents of highly skilled American professionals to U.S. international development initiatives overseas, including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. USAID serves as the interagency coordinator for Volunteers for Prosperity, providing leadership on developing the initiative’s organization, process and programming.
