Phoenix Area Provides Staff Support to the Red Lake Community

March 29, 2005- In response to the IHS Headquarters request for staff support to the Red Lake Community, the Phoenix Area was able to identify two staff from the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, (PIMC) Behavioral Health Program.

Dr. Ed Bez M.D., psychiatrist and Mr. Larry Salway, LCSW willingly accepted this assignment for an approximate two week period. Dr. Bez and Mr. Salway departed for Red Lake on March 29 and will be there until approximately April 10. Mr. Salway has 15 years of clinical social work experience and is noted as a traditional/spiritual healer as well. He’s also a certified substance abuse counselor. Dr. Bez has 10 years of psychiatric experience with a specialty in working with children and adolescent issues. Both of these individuals have extensive experience in working with diverse Native American Tribes.

The Phoenix Area graciously acknowledge these two individuals and the PIMC behavioral health program for there willingness and dedication to assist the Red Lake community during their recovery from the recent traumatic events.

The Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Health Facility celebrated its grand opening on March 10, 2005. Celebratory activities included a blessing, speeches, facility tours, and a luncheon. Speakers included:

  • Alfreda Mitre—Chairperson, Las Vegas Paiute Tribe
  • Don Davis— Director, Phoenix Area IHS
  • Tim Strong—Director, Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Health Center
