Clean Coal Demonstrations

Clean Coal Technology Compendium contains comprehensive information on the Department of Energy's major coal demonstration programs organized by program:

CCT Demonstrations

Programs
DOE provides up to 50 percent of the project funding for the three cooperative programs that are currently active:
(1) The Clean Coal Power Initiative (CCPI). Established in 2001 to implement the President's National Energy Policy recommendation to increase investment in clean coal technology, the CCPI program addresses the national challenge of ensuring the reliability of the U.S electric supply while simultaneously protecting the environment. The goal is to accelerate commercial deployment of advanced technologies to ensure that the United States has clean, reliable, and affordable electricity for the long term.
(2) The Power Plant Improvement Initiative (PPII). The PPII was established in 2000 by Congress to provide for the commercial-scale demonstration of technologies to assure the reliability of the nation's energy supply from both existing and new electric generating facilities. The ability to retrofit existing power plants with new clean coal technology equipment is essential in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and control energy costs.
(3) The Clean Coal Technology Demonstration Program (CCTDP). Founded in 1986 as the first of the major clean coal demonstration programs, the CCTDP was in the vanguard of the clean coal demonstration movement, and remains a viable program today, with several projects ongoing.

Information Sources
The Clean Coal Technology Compendium contains the collected results of the major demonstrations performed under these three programs in the form of project reports, topical summaries, presentations, fact sheets, and success stories. This vast trove of knowledge on clean coal technology is updated regularly with the latest information in this crucial energy field.

The Clean Coal Technology Roadmap is DOE’s plan to develop the technology needed for future high-efficiency, near-zero-emissions coal-fired power plants. It was developed cooperatively by DOE's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and the coal and power industry, notably the Coal Utilization Research Council (CURC) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The Roadmap effectively supports Presidential Coal Initiatives including Clear Skies, Clean Coal Power, Climate Change, Homeland Security, and Hydrogen/CO2 Sequestration. A Background [PDF-1.2MB] document providing perspectives on development of the Roadmap is also available.

The Clean Coal Today newsletter is the industry’s leading publication containing the latest news in the field from government, industry, and academia. Published quarterly by DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy (FE), Office of Clean Coal, it details the most up-to-date research on clean coal from both national and international perspectives. Clean Coal Today has been in continuous publication since 1990; all issues are archived and available online.
