Microalgal culture laboratory of West Sea Fisheries Institute of NFRDI is preserving useful microalgal strains for aquaculture.
◎ Purpose of Phytoplankton Strain Bank
The laboratory is operating a phytoplankton bank.
The bank is aiming at:
○ Securing nutritionally valued algal strains for indoor culture
mollusks, including oysters, ark shells, and shrimps
○ Nutritional value increase of microalgae for shellfish and shrimp
culture; DHA and EPA content increment of concentrated foods by
the cold storage (4℃)
○ Development of optimal foods classed by culture species
- Fermented foods for sea cucumber (Combination of phytoplankton,
Bacillus sp., and powder of macro algae)
- Functional foods for shellfish and shrimp (Mixture of probiotic
bacteria and phytoplankton)
○ Supplying aqauculturists and aquaculture researchers with pure algal strains, and
○ Supporting research scientists interested in the biology of phytoplankton
