MADIS Mesonet Database Now Contains
Over 20,000 Surface Stations
In July 2006, the ESRL Global Systems Division's (GSD) Meteorological
Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) surpassed 20,000 surface stations
in its mesonet database.

Canadian Weather Forecasts
Scientists from Environment Canada report that assimilation of ESRL's
Global Systems Division (GSD) ground-based GPS observations into Canadian
weather models improves their humidity forecasts.

Sanctuary Visitors View Science in a
Unique Fashion
A team from GSD's Technology Outreach Branch installed a Science on a
Sphere® exhibit that opened to crowds of nearly 10,000 on July 4th at
the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena, Michigan.

2005 OAR Outstanding Scientific Paper
Award
A paper by Stan Benjamin and co-authors describing the Rapid Update Cycle
analysis system and discussing some issues associated with high-frequency data
assimilation cycling has received one of the 2005 OAR Outstanding Scientific
Paper Awards.

Improved Aviation/Severe Weather Forecasts
through RUC Implementation
The GSD-developed Rapid Update Cycle, a very-short range forecast system
used by the National Weather Service, was upgraded on July 11. Key users of
this system include NWS and FAA aviation forecasters and NWS severe weather
forecasters.

NOAA's VACT Used to Evaluate
Augustine Volcano Eruptions
The Volcanic Ash Coordination Tool (VACT) developed by NOAA's Global
Systems Division (GSD) was used in real time to evaluate location, areal
extent, and movement of ash from the recent eruptions of Mt. Augustine
in Alaska.
