"Fish E.R." Brown Bag Lecture at Aquarium-Garden Education

Thursday, July 10 and Saturday, July 12. 12:45 - 1:30pm.

Topic: Fish ER: Medical Prevention and Treatment of Aquarium Animals

Lecturer: Becky Wegner, BioPark Aquarist

Becky will talk about the signs and symptoms that the aquarists watch for every day that might give forewarning of health issues for any of the animals in the Aquarium’s collection. She will give examples of specific medical issues that are often dealt with, such as Cryptocaria (a viral infection) and Urenema (a parasitic disease), and talk about various treatments and procedures used to treat illness and injury, such as using tonic immobility to essentially anesthetize animals without drugs. This presentation will be of interest to anyone who might be curious how aquatic animals are cared for in aquarium settings as compared to terrestrial animals, including humans, where doctors and veterinarians have direct access to their patients.

Since 1994, informal Brown Bag seminars have been offered on a monthly basis at the Albuquerque BioPark to BioPark visitors, employees and volunteers. Topics inlcude plant and animal themes relevant to the BioPark, and presenters may be BioPark staff or field experts. The same monthly seminar is offered twice on different days, to give as many people as possible the opportunity to attend. When the Brown Bag Lecture is held at the Rio Grande Zoo, it is included with general admission. When it is held at the Albuquerque Aquarium and Rio Grande Botanic Garden, admission is not required. For more information, call BioPark Education at 764-6245.
