What’s a gardener to do during the dreary winter days? Plan for spring, of course! Join Wes Brittenham, a landscape designer with over thirty years of experience, for this colorful presentation about factors to consider in planning a landscape. Learn how to benefit from microclimates, work with sun and shade patterns, choose plants that compliment the way you use your yard, and more. Wes will share his extensive knowledge about successful New Mexico landscapes and provide advice, ideas, and inspiration for your own.
Wes’s landscapes have been featured in Sunset and Garden Gate magazines. He has been a guest speaker for many of the annual Xeriscape Conferences and for groups including the Native Plant Society, the Xeric Garden Club and the Albuquerque Area Master Gardeners. His own garden has been toured by these groups and the American Society of Landscape Architects. His Earth Day xeric garden project for Bandelier Elementary has been recognized by The Conservation Association and Albuquerque Public Schools.
Brown Bag lectures take place twice a month (on a Thursday and a Saturday), alternating between the aquarium/garden and the zoo locations. The January lecture will take place in the Aquarium/Garden Education building, 2601 Central Ave. NW. There is no fee when lectures are a the Aquarium/Garden.
Zoo lectures take place in the Colores Education building and are included with Zoo admission.
The annual Winter Fire Colors flower show is scheduled to open the second week in January in the Rio Grande Botanic Garden’s Mediterranean Conservatory. This year's colorful display can be found hanging off the railings, flowing out of three-tiered baskets, perched on rocks, and planted for seasonal color in the ground at the Mediterranean Conservatory. Colors are hot reds, yellows, oranges, hot pinks and purples.
An established bed of forest Lilies, with light pink-orange flowers, is putting on its once-a-year show, also, in the Conservatory. In Mediterranean climates, winters are moist and bring fresh growth. Visit the Rio Grande Botanic Garden, 2601 Central Ave. NW, now through the end of February to soak up some winter moisture and anticipate the New Mexico spring. The Winter Fire Colors Show is included with regular admission -- $7 for adults 13-64; $3 for children 3-12 and seniors 65 and older.
Preschool children and one accompanying adult will explore the amazing world of animals and plants at the BioPark's Rio Grande Zoo, Albuquerque Aquarium and Rio Grande Botanic Garden! Join us as we play games, create fun works of art, sing songs and, of course, visit the BioPark's exhibits. Find out what animals swim in the sea, get a taste of farm life and discover Australia's amazing animals. Activities are designed for ages 3-6 and are facilitated with active parent participation. Classes alternate weekly between the Aquarium/Garden and Zoo.
Cost: $120 for entire winter session. Cost includes one child and one adult. Up to two additional children are $60 each. Group size is limited. Mr. Gregg Lowery's presentation It Must Have Been the Roses: Roses, Rose Gardens and Designs with Roses, will be held in the Rio Grande Botanic Garden Education Building, 2601 Central NW. Mr. Lowery is an internationally noted garden designer, one of the founders of Vintage Gardens in Sebastopol, California, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Rose Foundation, and editor of their scholarly journal 'Rosa Mundi'. More background on Gregg is available on the web at www.heritagerosefoundation.org and www.vintagegardens.com. For those interested in garden design, landscape use of roses, and old garden roses, Gregg is not to be missed in this, his first public speaking engagement in New Mexico. His visit to NM is courtesy of the Albuquerque Rose Society. There is no charge to attend this lecture.
Mr. Lowery will talk about the myriad ways in which gardeners and landscape professionals can expand their joy in growing roses, and the various ways in which roses are used in garden and landscape design around the world. This event will appeal equally to the hard-core rose exhibitor, the native plant enthusiast who may wish to integrate roses into a waterwise landscape, and to anyone who's landscape or garden ethos may fall somewhere in between.

Sleep next to the sharks at this family-friendly event. Participants will learn about interesting facts about ocean species and their nighttime behavior during this special Aquarium sleepover.
