Reporting agencies may specify the location of an offense within a hate crime incident as one of 25 location designations. Information regarding the location of the 7,722 hate crime incidents reported in 2006 indicated that:

  • 31.0 percent happened in or near residences or homes.
  • 18.0 percent took place on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 12.2 percent occurred in colleges or schools.
  • 6.1 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 3.9 percent happened in churches, synagogues, or temples.
  • 2.5 percent took place in commercial office buildings.
  • 2.1 percent occurred in bars or nightclubs.
  • 11.0 percent occurred in other or unknown locations.
  • 13.2 percent of the incidents occurred in the remaining specified location categories (e.g., public building, air/bus/train terminal, convenience store) or in multiple locations.

Location by Bias Motivation

Racial bias

Law enforcement agencies reported that 4,000 hate crime incidents were motivated by racial bias in 2006. Of these:

  • 32.0 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 19.5 percent occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 12.7 percent took place at schools or colleges.
  • 6.2 percent happened in parking lots or garages.
  • 9.4 percent took place in other or unknown locations.
  • 20.2 percent occurred in the remaining specified location categories or in multiple locations.

Religious bias

There were 1,462 reported hate crime incidents motivated by religious bias in 2006. Of these:

  • 29.0 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 17.7 percent took place in churches, synagogues, or temples.
  • 13.6 percent occurred in schools or colleges.
  • 7.0 percent happened on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 17.9 percent happened in other or unknown locations.
  • 14.8 percent of incidents occurred in the remaining specified location categories or in multiple locations.

Sexual-orientation bias

Law enforcement agencies reported 1,195 hate crime incidents based on the offenders’ bias against a particular sexual orientation in 2006. Of these:

  • 31.8 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 24.0 percent happened on highways, roads, alleys or streets.
  • 9.7 percent took place in schools or colleges.
  • 7.3 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 10.9 percent happened in other or unknown locations.
  • 16.3 percent occurred in the remaining specified location categories.

Ethnicity/national origin bias

There were 984 hate crime incidents motivated by ethnicity/national origin bias in 2006. Of these:

  • 28.4 percent occurred in or near residences or homes.
  • 20.8 percent took place on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 11.2 percent happened in schools or colleges.
  • 9.1 percent occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 7.8 percent occurred in other or unknown locations.
  • 22.7 percent took place in the remaining specified location categories.

Disability bias

Seventy-nine hate crime incidents were motivated by disability bias. Of these:

  • 32 incidents took place in or near residences or homes.
  • 13 incidents occurred on highways, roads, alleys, or streets.
  • 8 incidents happened in schools or colleges.
  • 5 incidents occurred in parking lots or garages.
  • 4 incidents took place in other or unknown locations.
  • 17 incidents occurred in the remaining specified location categories listed.

Multiple-bias incidents

Of the 2 multiple-bias hate crime incidents reported in 2006:

  • 1 occurred in a bank or savings and loan institution.
  • 1 took place in an other or unknown location.
