Argonne National Laboratory — Director, Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division

Argonne National Laboratory invites applicants for the position of Director of the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division, a new technical division formed from the merger of Argonne's existing Chemistry (CHM) and Chemical Engineering (CMT) Divisions.  The Division Director will:

  1. Provide scientific leadership by enhancing the strengths and visibility of existing basic and applied research programs, and seeking and developing new research programs that use state-of-the-art science and engineering to serve national needs;
  2. Recruit, hire, and retain world class science and engineering talent;
  3. Provide management leadership for the division's programs and its interfaces with all other parts and programs of the Argonne National Laboratory, the Department of Energy and other sponsors; and
  4. Foster and maintain high standards in ES&H and quality assurance for all of the division's research activities and operations.

The programmatic portfolio includes Atomic, Molecular and Optical Science; Chemical Dynamics; Solar Photochemistry; Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis; Batteries, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen; Analytical Chemistry; Nuclear and Environmental Chemistry and Technology; and National Security. The successful candidate will have a strong record of accomplishment in chemistry and/or chemical engineering and in program development, and a Ph.D. or equivalent in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field.  Managerial experience in a multi-program, multidisciplinary research environment is highly desirable.  Experience with the opportunities afforded chemical and chemical engineering research by the use of large scale scientific user facilities, such as synchrotron radiation and neutron sources or nanoscience centers, would be valuable. Individual must either have or be able to attain/maintain a “Q' level security clearance.
