Summaries of Minority Research Infrastructure Support Program (M-RISP) Awards

Freeman, Jean L.

Institution: University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX
Grant Title: Health Services Research in Underserved Populations
Grant Number: R24 HS11618-04

Project Description: The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) M-RISP will increase the capacity of its faculty to conduct rigorous health services research, recruit others with specific expertise in the subject, and strengthen the University's health services research (HSR) infrastructure. A major focus of the research will involve studies of the medically underserved, particularly in the Mexican-American community.

This project builds on three years of previous funding that enabled the UTMB to develop an infrastructure for successfully advancing HSR in underserved populations. This was accomplished by increasing the number of UTMB minority faculty conducting such research, recruiting additional faculty, and strengthening the training opportunities through formal courses, seminars and tutorials in essential areas such as biostatistics.

The project will increase infrastructure resources for scientific communication and dissemination, increase the number of UTMB faculty and medical students who conduct health services, and will facilitate access to pilot funding from UTMB research centers.
