Debate Continues Concerning TIDDs

$8.4 Million Goes to Housing Revitalization in Trumbull Village
On December 5, 2006 the Albuquerque City Council approved $8.4 million in funding to build new, owner occupied affordable housing in the Trumbull Village neighborhood of Albuquerque's Southeast Heights.

Legislation to Prohibit Issuance of STOP Fines
City Councilor Brad Winter (District 4), introduced legislation today prohibiting the issuance of any STOP fines (red light and speeding cameras and vans) until the Council has had an opportunity to review the findings of the Mayor’s Task Force which is due to be reported to the Council on January 15, 2008.
End the Iraq Occupation
Albuquerque City Council President Debbie O’Malley and Councilor Isaac Benton sent a letter and copies of a resolution, calling for Congress to rescind the Iraq War resolution and begin a phased redeployment of American troops from Iraq, to all five members of New Mexico’s Congressional delegation and President George W. Bush.

Unanimous Approval of City Archaeologist
After twenty one years of efforts to establish an archeological ordinance and city archaeologist, the Albuquerque City Council unanimously approved Councilor Heinrich’s “Preservation of Archaeological Sites” ordinance at their Monday night meeting.
Slumlords Must Be Held Accountable
The Albuquerque City Council unanimously approved the Slumlord Accountability Ordinance on Monday, August 6th, 2007, sponsored by City Councilor Martin Heinrich (District 6).
Block of Blight No Longer
A block of dilapidated housing that has been boarded-up for years is slated for removal by City crews. Jessie and Fred Sais, long-time active members of the Wells Park Neighborhood Association, were instrumental in pushing for removal of these nuisance properties.
Plans for Affordable Housing at Mesa del Sol
On Thursday, a Workforce Housing Plan for Mesa del Sol was approved by the Mesa del Sol Tax Increment District Board of Directors. The Plan, which is supported by Mesa del Sol, will go before the City Council for consideration during Monday’s meeting (R-07-193).

Federal Minimum Wage Goes Up, but Lags Albuquerque
Today, for the first time in a decade, the United States federal government has raised the nation’s minimum wage, up 70 cents to $5.85 an hour. Next summer the national minimum wage will again be raised by 70 cents to $6.55 and again in 2009, when the current legislation’s increases will top out at $7.25 per hour.

New Smoking Ban Not Imposed by City Council
It is reported that on June 11, 2007 Mayor Chavez issued an executive order banning smoking on all City property including parks, bus stops, golf courses, Isotopes Park and Sunport grounds. The Mayor neither discussed with the City Council his intention to take this action nor has he provided a copy of the executive order to the Council.

Heinrich Spearheads Liquor License Reviews
About 70 neighborhood people attended open meetings on Wednesday, May 30th and Thursday, May 31st, 2007 to give input about liquor sales at convenience stores in the South San Pedro, Parkland Hills, Trumbull Village and La Mesa neighborhoods in District 6.
Brad Winter Votes For Tax Cut
City Councillor Brad Winter issued the following public statement today: “Last week, I was pleased to vote for a tax cut for the people of Albuquerque – twice. The attack ads running against me are ridiculous and completely false.”
