Laboratory Support

Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

Current LIMS development is primarily focused on two features: integration with the recently arrived Fluidigm® BioMark genotyping platform, and development of enhanced inventory management functionality, allowing for improved tracking of reagent and other materials used in the laboratory. Future plans in the next six months include upgrade to the most recent commercial release of Sapphire, which will provide additional functionality, including an Ad-Hoc Query Tool, and integration with JasperReports, an open source reporting engine.

Genotyping Project Tracking

CGF project coordinators currently utilize a CGF web interface to internally track projects from assay development through sample handling and genotyping to final data delivery. Projects are comprised of a master request with subprojects that detail the specific phases of a project as it progresses from GRC approval through the CGF laboratory to completion. CGF is expanding the current project tracking system to serve as an interface for DCEG investigators to access the status of their specific projects in a user friendly format. In addition, CGF personnel will be able to manage projects and obtain project status through real-time integration with the CGF Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS); a relational database that stores information on DNA samples at the individual, plate, assay, process study and project level. By integrating these two systems, CGF staff as well as DCEG investigators will be able to perform customized queries and reporting tailored to their specific needs.

Inventory Management and Control System

CGF is currently developing an Inventory Management and Control system to support the requirements of the QA/QC, purchasing, billing and laboratory functions. Once completed, this application will enable inventory control and stock level management, assist in procurement and billing activities, and allow reagent and material lot tracking and lot quarantine in support of QA and QC functions. It is expected that this integrated system will be able to leverage some Sapphire LIMS functionality but will require additional capabilities developed specifically for the CGF.
