Fellowship and Grants

The Paul and Daisy Soros New Americans fellowships are designed to support graduate study in the United States. A fellow may pursue a graduate degree in any professional field (e.g., engineering, medicine, law, social work, etc.) or a scholarly discipline in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The fine and performing arts are also included. For purposes of the fellowship, a “New American” is an individual who is: 1) a resident alien (i.e., holds a Green Card); or 2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen; or 3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens. The program is open to individuals who retain loyalty and a sense of commitment to their country of origin as well as to the United States, but is intended to support individuals who will continue to regard the U.S. as their principal residence and focus of national identity. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Domestic Hunger Program
Deadline: October 1, 2008
The Domestic Hunger Program provides relief and development assistance to organizations that focus on those suffering from hunger and injustices related to hunger in the United States. Interested organizations may submit only one application per year and can be funded up to three consecutive years. Staples Foundation for Learning: Supporting Job Skills and Education Programs

The Staples Foundation for Learning mission is to provide funding to programs that support employment, job skills, or education for all people — with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. To be eligible for funding, applicant organizations must: have a nonprofit tax-exempt classification under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; align with the Staples Foundation for Learning’s mission; and give focus on job skills and education. Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy: 2009 National Grant Competition

The foundation’s grant making program seeks to develop or expand projects designed to support the development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children. Approximately $650,000 will be awarded but no grant request should exceed $65,000. To be considered, an organization must meet the following criteria: Must have current nonprofit or public status and have been in existence for two or more years as of the date of the application; must have maintained fiscal accountability; must operate an instructional literacy program that has been in existence for at least two years and includes one or more of the following components: literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy instruction for children in grades pre-k to three, and intergenerational literacy activities (Parent and Child Together time or P.A.C.T. time). The Liberty Hill Foundation’s ( http://www.libertyhill.org/ ) Queer Youth Fund makes multiyear grants to grassroots, local, state, or national nonprofit organizations located anywhere in the United States working to improve the quality of life among Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (GLBTQQ) youth. The Queer Youth Fund awards grants to innovative and effective leadership development programs or organizing projects that empower GLBTQQ youth to improve societal conditions affecting them and that make a long-term difference to their movement. State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants Available for Global Youth Service Day Projects

With support from the State Farm Companies Foundation ( http://www.statefarm.com/about/part_spos/grants/foundati.asp ), Youth Service America ( http://www.ysa.org/ ) is offering the annual State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant for youth- led community improvement projects across the United States and Canada (Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick provinces only). Knight Foundation Invites Entries of Digital Media Experiments for Worldwide Contest

The John S. and James L. Online Health Resource for Adult ESL Learners

A new online, stand-alone student nutrition lesson “Fast Food: Healthy Choices” is ready for ESL students http://www.lessonsforlivingwell.org/ It is a student-accessed, stand-alone interactive lesson with health information, vocabulary review, life skills reading and listening practice in a fun yet challenging context.
