The Paul and Daisy Soros New Americans fellowships are designed to support graduate study in the United States. A fellow may pursue a graduate degree in any professional field (e.g., engineering, medicine, law, social work, etc.) or a scholarly discipline in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The fine and performing arts are also included. For purposes of the fellowship, a “New American” is an individual who is: 1) a resident alien (i.e., holds a Green Card); or 2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen; or 3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens. The program is open to individuals who retain loyalty and a sense of commitment to their country of origin as well as to the United States, but is intended to support individuals who will continue to regard the U.S. as their principal residence and focus of national identity. Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Domestic Hunger Program

The Domestic Hunger Program provides relief and development assistance to organizations that focus on those suffering from hunger and injustices related to hunger in the United States. Interested organizations may submit only one application per year and can be funded up to three consecutive years. Staples Foundation for Learning: Supporting Job Skills and Education Programs

The Staples Foundation for Learning mission is to provide funding to programs that support employment, job skills, or education for all people — with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth. To be eligible for funding, applicant organizations must: have a nonprofit tax-exempt classification under 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; align with the Staples Foundation for Learning’s mission; and give focus on job skills and education. Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy: 2009 National Grant Competition

The foundation’s grant making program seeks to develop or expand projects designed to support the development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children. Approximately $650,000 will be awarded but no grant request should exceed $65,000. To be considered, an organization must meet the following criteria: Must have current nonprofit or public status and have been in existence for two or more years as of the date of the application; must have maintained fiscal accountability; must operate an instructional literacy program that has been in existence for at least two years and includes one or more of the following components: literacy for adults, parent education, pre-literacy or literacy instruction for children in grades pre-k to three, and intergenerational literacy activities (Parent and Child Together time or P.A.C.T. time). The Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proudly announce the request for applications for the Health Literacy Fellowship as part of the APTR-ODPHP Health Policy Fellowship Program.  Please note this training opportunity is different from the ehealth Fellowship, which is currently being filled.

This fellowship offers opportunities in public health planning as well as federal initiatives in health literacy and health communication. Fellows will gain leadership experience working in an interprofessional setting, and training alongside leading experts.

WHAT: The purpose of the announcement is to enable applicants to implement alternative projects under one of two categories in order to provide interim financial assistance, social services and case management to refugees in a manner that encourages self-sufficiency, reduces the likelihood of welfare dependency and fosters greater coordination among resettlement agencies and service providers in a community. In addition, the Wilson/Fish program enables refugee assistance programs to exist in every State where refugees are resettled. ORR is interested in projects that optimize all available resources–from Federal and State governments and the community–to make the resettlement period as beneficial as possible. An integrated system of assistance and services is an essential characteristic of a Wilson/Fish project.

The Magic Johnson Foundation provides grants and assists community-based organizations and programs that serve the health needs of those residing in inner-city communities. Grants are available for community-based HIV/AIDS programs that have a broad impact on underserved, urban neighborhoods. Activities may include outreach, education, prevention, health, and social services. Funding is also available for programs which provide educational facilities to children and youth in underserved areas and follow innovative approaches which seek to enable underserved youth to overcome barriers to healthy and productive lives.
