Environment
Southwestern’s mission of marketing and delivering Federal hydroelectric
power fully supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s strategic goal of improving
the quality of the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental
impacts to land, water, and air from energy production.
In Fiscal Year 2006, the environmentally sound energy marketed by Southwestern saved the
American people the equivalent of 2.5 million barrels of oil, 0.7 million tons of coal,
or 15.6 billion cubic feet of gas. This cost-based energy also prevented the emission of greenhouse
gases equivalent to 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide, 3.8 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide, and 3.1
thousand tons of nitrogen oxide.
As a steward of one of our Nation’s most precious resources –
water – Southwestern also dedicates significant effort in coordinating operating activities
with our customers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state game, fish and wildlife agencies, organized
recreational groups, and other interests to find ways to accommodate the needs of competing water
users whenever possible while still meeting our contractual requirements to provide electricity to
our customers.
