Poplar Point Nursery Grounds

Since tidal marshes of the Anacostia River were filled nearly a century ago, the Poplar Point area has undergone a variety of uses. A major portion of the area, first known as the U.S. Botanical Gardens, has supported nursery operations for the District of Columbia and the Architect of the Capitol for numerous decades. From 1942 through the 1970's, another section of the area was the Naval Receiving (NRS) Station Anacostia Park. Currently, METRO's Green line runs underground through the western end of the former NRS, while the National Park Service occupies some of the former NRS buildings to the east. The nursery grounds and greenhouses have been fallow and vacant for the last several years.

Activities within the nursery areas have resulted in the potential to impact the environment and human health. NOAA's Coastal Protection and Restoration Division, under an interagency agreement and the direction of the DC Department of Health, has been providing assistance to the District of Columbia to conduct environmental investigations and perform screening-level risk assessments of this portion of Poplar Point.
