Library Hours/Policies

1. What are the Library's hours?
The NIST Research Library is open to NIST staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  The Reference and Circulation Desks are staffed between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  The Library is closed to the public.

2. Who may check out materials, for how long, and how many?
NIST staff may borrow books for 3 weeks. Journals, AV materials, NIST reports circulate for 1 week. Reference materials do not circulate. There is a limit of 25 items that may be borrowed at any one time.

Research/Finding Materials

1. How do I begin my research?
The Reference Staff is available between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Information Desk to assist you with your research needs. You can also e-mail your queries to a Librarian, call the Desk on 301-975-3052 or find information in the Services Directory, or by visiting the Help Desk

2. Where do I go for Historical Research?
The NIST Museum and History Program maintains an Archives Collection and provides comprehensive information about NBS/NIST scientific accomplishments. For assistance, contact library@nist.gov or call 301-975-3052.

3. How do I request materials not found in the library?
Via the ILLiad system. Read Frequently Asked Questions about the ILLiad system. For more information, call 301-975-3981.

4. Can you tell me when new information comes in on my topic of interest?
The Reference Staff can assist you in setting up an alerting service, or sign up for one of the alerting services on the NIST Virtual Library. Call the Information Desk on 301-975-3052, or e-mail a Librarian. Questions can also be sent via the Online Catalog by selecting User Services, Request, Comments.

5. How can I place a hold on a materials currently checked out?
Requests may be submitted to the Circulation Staff via phone at 301-975-2793, e-mail the Circulation Desk, or via User Services in the Online Catalog.

6.  How do I request a book be delivered by inter-office mail?
Requests may be submitted to the Circulation Staff via phone at 301-975-2793, e-mail the Circulation Desk, or via User Services in the Online Catalog.

7. How do I request an article be delivered by inter-office mail?
Requests must be submitted via the ILLiad system. Read Frequently Asked Questions about the ILLiad system. For more information, call 301-975-2811.

8. How do I suggest materials be included in the library collection?
Suggestions for materials to be added to the Library's collection may be submitted using the online form, Recommendation for Addition to the NIST Research Library.

9. How do I find out how many times my publications have been cited?
Citation counts are a great way to gauge the impact and value of your work. See how often, and who, is citing your publications through the database Web of Science.

Select "Full Search", then "Cited Ref Search" at the bottom of the screen. Enter your information and click "Look Up" for a list of your works. Select specific titles or all of your papers and then press "Search" to return the list of authors that have cited your publications.

Checking Out Materials

1. How do I check out a book, journal, or videocassette?
If you are a first time user, you must register at the Circulation Desk. The Circulation Staff can assist you in checking out materials or you may use the Self Service Checkout. If you use the Self-Check option, you must use the number in the upper right hand corner on the back of your NIST badge in order to access this system.

2. How do I renew a book?
Patrons may stop by the Circulation Desk, call the Circulation Desk at 301-975-2793, or visit the Online Catalog and select My Account, then Renew My Materials.

3. How can I check out journals? Renew a journal loan?
All journals except the current issue may circulate for a week. Journals cannot be renewed.

Special Collections

1.  How long are printed newspapers kept?
The Wall Street Journal is displayed for one week.

2.  Where can I find videos of NIST Colloquia?
The Audio-visual Collection is located on the mezzanine level of the Library. To find a colloquium title, search the title in the Online Catalog, and retrieve the videocassette by call number in the Audio-visual Collection.

3. Can I borrow Oral Histories and Photographs from the Archives?
Patrons may use these materials in the Reading Area of the Library. Please contact Mary-Deirdre Corragio, 301-975-5158, to make arrangements.
