ASHCRAFT, DOROTHY SANDUSKY Dorothy Sandusky Ashcraft, born on July 30, 1933, in Albuquerque, NM, went home on Thursday, October 23, 2014. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Ernest; her beloved son, John Ashcraft, and wife Deena Ashcraft; her cherished daughter-in-law, Vicki Ashcraft; her treasured son-in-law, Richard Ferrel; son, Bill Ashcraft; her appreciated and loved sister, Barbara, and family; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, Ernest's family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Ferrel. Dorothy spent her 81 years in Albuquerque. She loved her home. She graduated from Albuquerque High School, married and raised a family that she loved so much. She loved her family gatherings, her volunteer work at local hospitals, her church family and her card ministry. Dorothy is grateful for all the love, support and prayers. BACA, CYNTHIA L. Age 33, passed away on October 20, 2014. Cynthia was born on January 7, 1981 in Albuquerque, NM to Lorraine Garcia and Dale Chavez. She was a very loving mom. She lived her life to the fullest and we all loved her dearly. She is survived by five kids, Jasmine Baca, Isaiah Trujillo, Dijette Molina, Cynthia, Eloysa Miera; three sisters, Desiray Trujillo, Nicole Valenzuela, Valeria Chavez; three brothers, Favian Chavez, Michael Chavez, Dale Jr. Chavez; uncle Alvin Trujillo and wife, Lorraine. She is also survived by her grandmother and grandfathers, Mary Lou Trujillo, Joe Cruz and Defino Ortiz. She was preceded in death by grandparent Eufemia Ortiz, three uncles, Tim, Lawrence and Donald Trujillo. She was loved by many other uncles, aunts and cousins! GRUBBS, FRANK H. Frank H. Grubbs passed away on October 24, 2014. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Julia Anne (Judy), and is survived by his son, Geoffrey Hilton and wife, Christina, of Washington, D.C. and grandchildren, Alison and Mark; daughter, Zoe Anne of Ham Lake, MN and grandchildren, Tamara, Emily, and Katie, and great-grandsons, Liam, Chase; great-granddaughter, Felicia and great-great- granddaughter, Klarissa; son, Kevin Eugene and wife, Matilda, of Anchorage, AK, and grandchildren, Samantha and Frank. Frank was born in Albuquerque on June 12, 1922, graduated from Albuquerque High in 1939, and the Western School for Private Secretaries in 1941. He was employed in the War Plans Division of the Office of the Chief Signal Officer, Washington, D.C. until the outbreak of WWII when he enlisted in the Signal Corps and was commissioned in 1942. Landing in Normandy on Omaha Beach 1944, he served in the 3104th Signal Service Battalion in the European Theater until the end of hostilities. Upon return home, he was employed by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. He attended the University of New Mexico where he was active in the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity, serving as chapter president and later as District President. In 1950 he received a BBA degree and an MBA from what is now the Anderson School of Management. In 1950 he married Julia Ann Rodgers and was employed by Sandia Corporation in the Accounting Department and later in the Business Methods Department. In 1955 he was appointed Manager of the Electronic Data Processing Department where he directed the installation and operation of the first large scale business computer in the western United States. In 1963, Frank resigned from Sandia Corporation to attend Seabury Western Theological Seminary where in 1966 he was awarded a M.Div. degree. Ordained Deacon in June 1966 at St. John's Cathedral, he served as Curate at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Midland, TX and was ordained to the Priesthood on December 23, 1966. In 1968 he accepted election as Rector of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in El Paso, TX. He served on the Standing Committee of the Diocese of the Rio Grande for eight years and was twice elected Deputy to General Convention. He was active in local affairs in El Paso, a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, a director of the Arthritis Foundation and Heart Association, and established a runaway shelter for homeless youth. He also founded the Police Chaplain Program in El Paso. He retired in 1984, became a stockbroker, and was a Registered Investment Advisor until moving back to Albuquerque in 1993. After his service in WWII, Frank joined the New Mexico National Guard and was State Signal Officer on the staff of the Adjutant General for a number of years before transferring into the Army Reserve Corps where he was assigned to the Selective Service System. Serving a number of active duty tours at the National Headquarters of the System in Washington, he organized the conversion of the National Selective Service System to computer operation. Promoted to Colonel, he was named Commanding Officer of the El Paso Reserve Unit. He retired in 1982 after 41 years of service. In 2009 he resigned his Orders in the Episcopal Church and was confirmed in the Catholic Church. Family and Friends may visit Friday, October, 31, 2014, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. GUZMAN, SAMUEL J. "MAMO" Samuel J. Guzman, 21, passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014. He survived by his mother Leticia; father Steve; brother Daniel; sister Cellina; his brother William; brother Stephen; sister April; grandparents Edward and Dolores; grandparents Jess and Bertha; sister-in-law Erica; and brother-in-law Josh. He had a great love for driving his jeep places he wasn't supposed to, Jeep runs on the weekends, Taco Tuesday at Bobs Burgers, and random camping trips on the weekends. HAASE, ANTHONY PHILLIP Age 24, a Rio Rancho Police Officer passed away in the line of duty on Sunday, October 26, 2014. He was born in Gilroy, CA on March 1, 1990 to Phil and Cheri (Dustin) Haase. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Beatrice Dustin; grandfather, Bob Haase. Anthony is survived by his wife, Nichole Haase of Rio Rancho, NM; parents, Phil and Cheri Haase; sister, Wendy Haase of San Diego, CA; brother, Nick Haase of Rio Rancho, NM; grandmother, Sandy Haase of Goodyear, AZ; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ron and Debbie Hetes; sister-in-law, Jade Hetes; brother-in-law, Michael Hetes; nephews, Luke and Jagger. Anthony graduated from Rio Rancho High School in 2008. While at RRHS he was their star pitcher for the baseball team, taking them to their first state championship in 2007. He received a scholarship to Cochise Junior College and was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 2010. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. Anthony was a generous, kind and compassionate person, he received many compliments from fellow officers and citizens. Above all he was a loving husband, Nichole's soul mate. HAINES, LAURA S. "Life lends us only feet, Death gives us wings." Laura Sue Haines joined the angels in her flight to Heaven on the 28th of October, 2014. She was born in Las Cruces, NM on 13 September, 1962 and attended Las Cruces Public Schools and New Mexico State University. Her career in life was as diversified as were the people that she touched in her journey through this life. Laura achieved the rank of Captain, flying 747 jumbo jets at a time when there were very few women in the nation that had accomplished this feat in a male dominated profession. Having logged more than 11,000 hours of flying time, she literally had flown all over the world including carrying supplies to our troops in the Mideast after the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001. To the community of Socorro during the past 10 years, Laura brought her knowledge in aviation, extensive contacts and skills in administration and leadership to play a key role with the Socorro Municipal Airport. She founded the M Mountain Fly-In Event in 2008 to present day which has attracted aviators and enthusiasts around the country to Socorro. To recognize the contributions of Captain Laura S. Hanes to the M Mountain Fly-In, to the City of Socorro, Mayor Rav Bhasker has issued a proclamation renaming the event "Captain Laura S. Haines M Mountain Fly-In." She most recently channeled her energy and love of horses and rodeo in helping with the city's new arena, helping to make it a one of a kind venue in this part of central New Mexico. Laura was a member of the South West Barrel Racing Association; the National Barrel Horse Association; and a Board of Director on the Socorro County Fair and Rodeo. She was also a long time Barrel Racing Director for the New Mexico Rodeo Association, organizing the Wild Bunch Reunion Rodeo Association which raised money for scholarships for local youth. Laura organized many Socorro County NMRA Rodeos. She herself competed throughout New Mexico, winning many awards in Barrel Racing. Whether it be soaring through the skies flying left seat in a 747 jumbo jet or riding her spoiled barrel horse Twister, her life was filled with laughter and smiles. Left to cherish her memory are her mother, Sue Haines of Metuchen, NJ; her father Ben H. Haines and wife Sandra Herkenhoff of Las Cruces, NM; her sister Cynthia Reynolds and husband Al of Metuchen, NJ; brother Josh Kauffman of Las Cruces; Uncles Edward Haines (Nyeta), Brian Haines, Brandon Haines; Aunts Bobbie Newhart (Ed), Elizabeth Stromberg (Thor); cousin Emily Montoya (Kenneth); and those that she knew through her work and schooling in Las Cruces, her career in aviation, her rodeo participation and her work in the Socorro community. Services for Laura Sue Haines will be held at the Friends of Epiphany Episcopal Church, 908 Leroy Place, Socorro, NM by Reverend Linda Lucas at 11:00am on Friday, October 31, 2014. HOOPER-GARCIA, SHIRLEY M. November 5, 1935 - October 24, 2014 Shirley passed away on October 24, 2014 at her home in Roswell, NM after a lengthy battle with cancer. She will lie in state at LaGrone Funeral Chapel, 900 South Main St., Roswell, NM on Friday October 31st from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Visitors welcome. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 4:00 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 935 W. Mescalero, Roswell, NM, with Pastor Sean Lee officiating. An additional visitation and memorial will take place at the State Capitol Rotunda in Santa Fe, NM on November 7, 2014. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with the service immediately following. Her ashes will be buried at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A memorial will also take place at the Lovington, NM cemetery at a later date. Born on November 5, 1935 in Meadow, Texas to Isom F. and Lena C. (Gregory) Collier, Shirley was one of 13 siblings. She is survived by two sisters, Betty Beatty and LaVida Kinnear and husband Wayne, all of Roswell. She was predeceased in death by her parents, husband Edward P. Garcia, brothers Jake and Joe Collier and sisters Lillian Hall, Nona (Tootsie) Vinson, Jackie Church, Ruby Rodgers, Frances (Frankie) Kizziah, Bobbie Lavash, and Maxine Raburn. Shirley and her family moved to Lovington, NM in 1939, where she graduated from high school in 1953. She has lived in Lovington, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Portales and Hobbs. In her early years she worked for private law firms as a legal secretary, then in 1959 she began her career in the New Mexico state government. She was the secretary to the Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives; she also worked as the Assistant Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives and as legal secretary to two judges for the Supreme Court of Appeals. Shirley then went on to serve as New Mexico Secretary of State, and after that as Lea County Clerk. She was Administrator for the Hobbs Office of State Public Defender, then Chief Deputy of the Santa Fe County Clerk's office. She served on the New Mexico School for the Deaf Board of Regents and was one of the founders of the International Association of the Parents for the Deaf. Shirley took pride in volunteering for many organizations for children with disabilities. She is survived by her sons John Hooper of Santa Fe, NM, Greg Hooper and his children Zachary and Taylor of Chandler, AZ, her step-sons Scott Lucky of Post Falls, Idaho, Anthony Garcia his wife Karen and their children Anthony, Trevor, and Nicholas of Temecula, CA, Ted Garcia of Chula Vista, CA, and Reuben Garcia his wife Andrea and their children, Jessica, Parker, and Joseph of Canyon Country, CA. She also leaves numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Tareq Braik, MD and his staff, Gentiva Hospice, Comfort Keepers and other caregivers for their passion and caring for Shirley throughout her illness. JUE, GIN AH Age 90, passed away Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Gin was born on May 13, 1924 in Kai Ping Xian Mao Gang Guanghan Li, Guanghan Province, China to Hoy don Jue and Lai Foon Wong Jue. He had a long and prosperous life, and was blessed by a marriage to Josehine Navakuku Jue for sixty-five years. He was a proud father and is survived by one daughter, Frances Jue Dallas and son-in-law Bennard Dallas. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard and Tony. Gin immigrated to the U.S. in 1941. He enlisted in the U.S Army in 1943 and served in the 134th CB in the Asiatic Pacific American Campaign. After he was honorable discharged in 1945, he settled in Winslow, AZ, where he and his cousins owned an operated the Grand cafe. He met his future wife Josephine who was employed as a Harvey girl at the historic La Posada Hotel. From Winslow he, his wife, Josephine, and his daughter Frances moved to Show Low, AZ, where they operated the Show Low Cafe. In 1964, Gin, his family and his brother Tony and his family moved to Socorro, NM, where they owned and operated the Vagabond Motel and Restaurant for a number of years. In 1992, in New Mexico, Gin was the first Chinese person elected to a public office. He served eight years as a Socorro County Commissioner. He established a college scholarship fund for Socorro High School graduate, funded by his entire salary of eight years as Commissioner. He was known as a generous and cheerful person to his family and friends. KADENA, EMILIA If I had to give my Yiayia, Greek for grandmother, a job title it would definitely be a gardener. She planted a seed wherever she went. Emilia Kadena left us on October 26, 2014. She was born Emilia Delagrammatika in, then, Constantinople, Turkey on August 15, 1916, the name day of our Virgin Mary. Six years later, with the fall of the Ottoman Empire, her family was made refugees and forced out of Turkey to Drapetsona, Greece (near Piraeus). Emilia took her job serious as the oldest of seven brothers and sisters and, innately, became their caretaker. The seed she planted as their nurturer was one that she was proud of and would remain with her throughout her life. Her youngest brother, Mixalis Delagrammatikas, is still living in Athens, today. The next seeds she planted would be the most important ones of her life: she met the only man she would ever marry, our grandfather, Dimitri Kadenas, and moved to Athens, Greece where she bore two children, and were the apple of her eye. She is survived by them today: Calliope Popie White and Alexandros Kadenas. Calliope would later marry the now deceased, Rutherford D. White and move to Albuquerque. Alexandros would marry Donna Hine and move to New Jersey to start his family. The seeds of strength, nurturing, and wisdom were planted in her eight grandchildren, Aimilia, Demetrios, Constantine (Dino), Danielle, Melita, Danny, Angie, and Nick; and will surely be passed on to her five great-grandchildren, Aidan, Luke, Kino, Kawi, and Amaya. Through these seeds we will keep her legacy alive and her memory eternal. We were blessed with a Yiayia that was able to come to the United States to help raise all of us at one at a time and even more blessed that she showed us our Greek heritage by allowing us to spend our summers in the coastal town of Nea Makri, Greece to give us another perspective of life in this world. Yiayia, you taught us to appreciate what we had; thank you for teaching us how to knit, sing, laugh with our souls, enjoy life, and cook-we know nobody can make a spanakopita or baklava like you. We will try, but it won't be the same. Thank you for teaching us that you can be mad at somebody for doing something senseless, but you do not have to be mean to them-always forgive. Thank you for teaching us what it truly means to be strong and selfless in every sense of the word. My hope is that we all become a gardener and plant the seeds you planted in us. Funeral services for Emilia Kadena will be held Thursday, October 30, 2014 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church at 308 High St., Albuquerque, NM 87102. ROSS, LILA F. Lila Franklin Ross, 89, passed away peacefully October 27th in her daughter's home. Lila lived her entire adult life in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, the Reverend Cannon Edmund P. "Ned" Ross and her son-in-law Robert "Jeff" Kelly. She is survived by brother Major George E. Franklin, Ret. of Albuquerque; children Lynn Dee Kelly, Steve Ross and wife Angel Wells Ross, Georgianne Norris, Robin Jakino and husband Mike Jakino, and Leslie Burgess and husband Bob; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great- grandchildren. Lila studied voice at UNM, sang in a USO Trio during WWII, was an accomplished pianist and church soloist for more than 40 years. At UNM she was an Alpha Chi Omega and stayed active as an alumna. Music was a key part of her life and she passed her love of music onto her family. She was an active member of Sigma Alpha Iota musical sorority. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1st at 3:00 pm at St. John's Cathedral. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to the charity of your choice in honor of Lila.
