Recently, Piers Morgan penned an incendiary piece titled "If black Americans want the N-word to die, they will have to kill it themselves." I held my breath the entire time I read this misguided piece. I saw all the markings of a privileged white male telling me and my community how to behave ourselves.

To spend more of our time trying to push people back to buying records is an exercise in futility. The smart ones will find a different way. Spotify could be that way, and if it isn't, it can definitely help transition us into a world where streaming is key, and CDs are just plastic circles.

YouTube is where new shows and obsessions are being spawned. No longer does mainstream television control the market. So if you're in the need for a fix, and you don't want to have to wait weeks for new episodes, YouTube is at your fingertips, and so is a whole new world of web series.

Since Aug. 9 the public has been misled into equating "justice" for Michael Brown with a grand jury indictment against his killer, Ferguson officer Darren Wilson. But an indictment is not the justice Brown supporters are searching for, and its constant positioning as such by the media is tremendously damaging and dangerous.

We've now arrived at the era of "feeding the base," telling the most likely voters what they've told consultants they most want to hear -- the clanging echo chamber that passes for modern American political discourse. Just as advertisers' wishes have merged with (if not driven) technological change in the media universe, so in politics: speaking to the larger mass audience is a rare event, limited to special ceremonial occasions like inaugurations. The rest of the messaging is targeted, if not dog-whistled, to specific tranches of the desired constituency, sliced as finely as the mortgages (pre-2008) or the auto loans in modern financial "securities."

While thinking about the Sandy Hook shooting evokes more sadness than anxiety in general, focusing on explanations leads to a shift in emotional tone from sadness to anxiety. Importantly, it appears that this emotional shift -- especially the growing anxiety -- is tied to people's lingering worry that a similar tragedy might occur in the future.

Since I have not heard a compelling argument about why I should be grossed out by a naked woman with a big ass in a magazine, I am left to speculate about why many women find this so unsettling.

As the Ebola epidemic rages on, health officials have gone into the trenches around the globe, putting their lives at risk to save those of others afflicted by the devastating virus. Yes, but... what do our beloved celebrities think of it all?
