Program Home | Apply | 2014 Highlights

2014-15 Locations:
November 14-16: Columbus, Ohio | Feb/Mar 2015: Region 3
July 2015: Region 10 | November 2015: Region 6

"Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." — John F. Kennedy

The Ted Scripps Leadership Institute helps participants become better leaders by offering a mix of sessions focused on interpersonal and organizational leadership skills, as well as sound chapter management practices. Leaders can immerse themselves in everything SPJ, take an intuitive look at their own leadership style and make time for serious personal reflection, all while building new relationships with other SPJ leaders.

We love this program. So much, in fact, that we’re bringing it to your backyard. The Institute will make four stops this year at locations around the country.

Who?

SPJ encourages chapters to send 2-3 members of their board, from incoming president to membership chair and any position in between.

What?

Participants in this interactive program learn:

— About their individual leadership style, its strengths, and how to better interact with others
— The importance of building a sense of community among chapter members and how that can be accomplished
— The role of the leader in recruiting, developing and rewarding talent
— The dynamics of group decision-making and how leaders can help groups make better choices
— New insights on how to engage and motivate peers
— How to effectively manage responsibilities while remaining focused on important goals

When and where?

The Ted Scripps Leadership Institute makes four stops around the country each year. In 2014-15, we’ll be stopping in:

Region 4: Columbus, Ohio: November 14-16, 2014
— Region 3: February/March 2015
— Region 10: July 2015
— Region 6: November 2015

Participants are responsible for their travel costs to and from each location, but lodging and meal costs are provided.

How?

Apply. Complete the online application before the application deadline for each location:

Region 4: Columbus, Ohio: October 3
— Region 3: TBA
— Region 10: TBA
— Region 6: TBA

Applications will be reviewed and invitations will be extended to participants. A submitted application does not guarantee an invitation for this program.

The fine print

Bring some cash. Participants’ lodging and meal costs are provided. Incidentals and spending money are the responsibility of the participant.

Invest in yourself. Each selected participant will be required to make an investment of $50 in their training upon acceptance into the program.

Participation required. If accepted, you must participate in all training sessions and/or activities held during the Institute.

About the Institute

The program was established in 1996 and is funded through a generous grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation.

The Institute is named for Ted Scripps, grandson of the founder of The E.W. Scripps Company. The funding is provided through the Scripps Howard Foundation by Ted's sons, Edward W. Scripps Jr. and William H. Scripps, as a way to honor their father's memory.

The Ted Scripps Leadership Institute provides journalists with tools to make their chapters stronger and continues to build that network of support for leaders at the local level.
