Mike Mezeul II

If you didn't stay up late on Monday night to witness the "Blood Moon," fear not. The cosmos have conveniently scheduled three reruns over the next two years. Can't wait six months? Observer freelancer Mike Mezeul II has you covered.

He's the guy who shot the time-lapse photo you've probably already seen on your social media feed. (When my mother-in-law posts it on her Facebook feed, describing it as merely "viral" is woefully inadequate.)

The Baltimore Sun's photography blog caught up with Mezeul for an explanation of how he did it. Short answer: He stood out in the cold for a really long time.

The official unveiling of the new lights on Bank of America Plaza (aka that green building downtown) isn't for another two weeks. But those fortunate enough to be traversing downtown in the predawn hours Wednesday morning were treated to a brief preview.

The lights, as you see in the picture above, are no longer green, at least not permanently. The old argon tubes have been replaced with modern LEDs as part of a multimillion-dollar renovation of the tower, and the LEDs can be programmed to change color.

This photo, of Councilman Philip Kingston and his predecessor Angela Hunt (or vice versa?) was posted on Facebook over the weekend. "I do not make an attractive woman, but my legs are dead sexy," Kingston said of his attire on his Facebook page. We sincerely hope this is a Halloween costume and not his new wardrobe.

An hour before the kickoff of the Cowboys' season at AT&T Stadium Sunday night, three American icons posed for a photo. If a weirder three-pack of American icons has ever posed for photo, we haven't seen it.

Weirder still is the placement of the Hulkster's hand near Jerry's crotch. We're not sure what's going on here, just that we hope to God it's not the beginning of another Hulk Hogan sex tape.

Update: Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia missed the photo op but is also a Cowboys fan.

It was an unusually wet July this year, or so it seemed to North Texans accustomed to summers of monotonous, unbroken heat. In reality, the 2.05 inches of precipitation was right around the historical average, and it came in drizzles that evaporated almost as soon as the sun re-emerged. It was far from enough to pull the region from the drought it's been suffering through for years, which remains severe.

The situation is better here here than in other parts of the state, where reservoirs are drying up and residents are turning to recycled waste water. All told, 95 percent of Texas is in drought, as you can see in the July 30 snapshot from the U.S. Drought Monitor. It shows no sign of abating anytime soon.

With that in mind, the Texas Water Development Board is issuing an open call for Texans to take pictures of the drought as they experience it. "It could be a dry creek bed, withered crops, wildfires and burn bans," the agency says in a press release. "But it could also be native plants that are flourishing despite the drought, creative water conservation measures or other innovative water solutions to our drought-prone climate."
