KENNEDALE (CBS 11 NEWS) - Inconsolable, 17-year-old Ashley Kline remembers the young man she was hoping to call her boyfriend once again.
“He was my ex, we just got in contact. It’s hard to know he’s gone,” says Kline.
The 18-year-old victim was supposed to be staying with Kline and her family in Kennedale, but he never came home Tuesday night.
Kennedale Police say a motorist driving along Little School Road would find the young man’s body strewn on the cold concrete of a church parking lot.
“I just woke up this morning and he wasn’t there. I just knew, he’s dead,” Kline says.
The Kennedale Police Department is investigating. It’s believed the man suffered trauma to his head, likely from a gunshot wound.
For pastors at the Life Fellowship Church, it was shocking to see a police investigation so close to the place where they worship. They say the victim was not a member of the church.
“We’re sorry that this happened. Our heart goes out to the neighborhood and anyone that knows the victim,” says Cody Hooper, a youth pastor at the Life Fellowship Church.
Samantha Kline, another friend of the victim, believes the man went to meet a friend Tuesday night. A friend who she says had been showing off a weapon to the victim earlier.
“His friend was showing him a gun, acting like it was an air soft or like it was a BB gun,” said Samantha Kline.
She adds that though the victim wasn’t perfect, he didn’t deserve this.
“I hope they really do find who did this to him. He may have been involved in some bad things in the past, but he was a great person. He was. He always put other people before him. Always.”
The victim’s identity was not released as his family had not yet been notified of his death upon airing of CBS 11’s story.
