Show your love to homeless pets during Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month

Posted Oct. 3, 2014

October is Adopt-a-shelter-pet month

October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Dog Month, and Fort Worth’s Animal Care & Control, a division of Code Compliance, is urging animal lovers to do their part to help raise awareness for homeless animals.

For many pet owners and advocates, it’s hard to understand how someone could give up a pet. Yet according to AnimalShelter.org, 8-10 million dogs and cats enter shelters nationally each year. In Fort Worth, the majority of 20,000 animals picked up annually from the streets were struggling to stay alive due to the owner’s irresponsibility.

There are many ways to get involved this October — and every month, for that matter — ranging from adopting a pet from a shelter or helping spread the word about responsible pet ownership.

  • Spread the word. Spread the adoption and responsible pet ownership message with friends and followers online by liking “Fort Worth Henry” on Facebook. Henry, a four-year-old Lab-mix, was once a Fort Worth shelter pet. He was found on the streets as a stray, extremely sick and nearly starving. The veterinarian didn’t know if Henry would make it. But today Henry is a healthy and happy pup who represents all shelter pets in Fort Worth.
  • Adopt. In partnership with PetSmart Charities, Fort Worth operates adoption centers in two PetSmart stores: I-20 at Hulen and I-35W at Heritage Trace Parkway.
  • Donate. Fort Worth shelters are always in need of towels and blankets, dog and cat food, newspaper and even pet toys. Donations can be dropped off at either PetSmart store or at the Chuck Silcox Animal Shelter, 4900 Martin St.
  • Get active for animals. Volunteers can take dogs for walks, socialize them and assist at mobile adoption events. To volunteer, email Animal Care & Control or call 817-392-1234.
  • Stop animal cruelty. Pets rely on us to keep them healthy by providing food, water, shelter and vet care. Too many times this is not the case. If you see a pet being neglected or enduring acts of cruelty, call 817-392-1234. If it’s an emergency situation, contact 911.
