C | 1 | Matt Duchene ActiveMatt Duchene was a primary factor in Colorado's 7-3 win over Vancouver on Friday night. His feed to Jarome Iginla was just filthy to tie the game at one late in the first. Duchene's dish to Jamie McGinn to tie the game at two in the second was just as pretty. It was his burst of speed to create a breakaway for himself in the third that was jaw-dropping, he scored to make it 5-2. Through eight games he now has seven points (three goals). It's like he's good at hockey, or something. Oct 25 |
| 2 | Nathan MacKinnon ActiveThe Avalanche are refusing to relate Nathan MacKinnon's slow start with the dreaded sophomore jinx. "It will happen for him," coach Patrick Roy said. "It doesn't have to be the perfect goal. Just put pucks on net and good things happen." Matt Duchene called the jinx a "bunch of crap" and said MacKinnon's offensive will take off if the second-year forward "keeps skating and working hard." The 2014 Calder Trophy winner had some lengthy goal droughts last season as well and he's gone goalless in his first nine games this year. MacKinnn has four assists, 24 shots and a minus-6 rating, but we recommend staying patient with him. His talent should take over once he gets the monkey off his back. Oct 27 |
| 3 | Daniel Briere ActiveDaniel Briere will be a healthy scratch in Thursday's match against the New York Islanders. Recent call up Dennis Everberg will replace him in the lineup. Everberg will play with John Mitchell and Alex Tanguay. Briere has two goals and one assist in 10 games this season. Oct 30 |
| 4 | John Mitchell ActiveThird-line center John Mitchell is an underrated but key player for the Avalanche. Although he doesn't contribute much offensively his possession rates are very high and he is an excellent defensive player who can shut down an opponent's top scorers. Mitchell is a great asset for a real hocky team, but not much value to a fantasy one. We just thought we'd Mitchell a shoutout for his fine work in Colorado. Oct 25 |
| 5 | Marc-Andre Cliche ActiveColorado has signed Marc-Andre Cliche to a two-year contract extension. According to capgeek.com, the deal is worth $700,000 per season. "Marc-Andre has been a solid addition to our hockey club," executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic said in a team release. "He has done a tremendous job on the penalty kill, has a great work ethic and we're excited to have him under contract for the next two years." In 53 games this season, Cliche has recorded six points. Feb 27 |
LW | 1 | Ryan O'Reilly ActiveRyan O'Reilly assisted on two goals but it wasn't enough as the Avalanche fell 4-3 in OT to the Panthers on Tuesday. O'Reilly was part of the three-goal second period for the Avalanche that included two power-play goals. It has been a tough start for a lot of the Avs' top players and O'Reilly has not been immune to it, posting a goal and three assists in seven games this season. Colorado coach Patrick Roy called out his team after the loss on Tuesday and we will see what kind of effect it has on the team going forward. Oct 22 |
| 2 | Gabriel Landeskog ActiveGabriel Landeskog has three goals in his last four games. He scored in the third period to give Colorado a 2-1 lead, but San Jose won the game 3-2 in a shootout. Landeskog doesn't have any assists this season, but it's encouraging that the puck is starting to go in for him. Oct 29 |
| 3 | Jamie McGinn ActiveJamie McGinn scored a power play goal in Colorado’s 2-1 overtime loss to Winnipeg. The goal was McGinn’s third of the season. The Avalanche have now scored just 20 goals in nine games this season. The Avs have been a bit of an enigma so far. They have so much firepower upfront but have been unable to generate much offense. Colorado now falls to 2-4-3 on the year. Oct 26 |
| 4 | Cody McLeod ActiveThe Colorado Avalanche have been impressed with the play of Cody McLeod. McLeod is a tough customer who brings a lot of energy to the Avs' lineup. "He's the guy you want to go out to battle with. He's the guy you want on your team," Landeskog said of McLeod. "He's not fun to play against but certainly the guys want him on your side of the trenches. It's testament to his character and who he is. He's got one of the toughest jobs, but yet he goes out there and does it year in, year out, day in, day out. He's a leader, and guys follow him." Oct 26 |
RW | 1 | Jarome Iginla ActiveJarome Iginla is confident that the Avs will be able to turn things around this season. The Avalanche are 2-4-2 and have struggled to score goals most of the season. "It's been a slow start for the team and myself, but I think it's going to get better. I really do," said Iginla. "Not many teams in the league have not only our young talent, but talent, period. We're going to get it turned around. I'm going to find ways to score goals again, and hopefully we'll look back on this as being a better team for it. Every team goes through tough stretches during the year, and hopefully we can have this be our toughest." The 37-year-old has two goals and seven points in eight games this season. Oct 26 |
| 2 | Alex Tanguay ActiveAlex Tanguay scored a shorthanded marker in the Avalanche's 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Tuesday. The 40 year-old now has five goals and two assists during a six-game point streak. The Avalanche also a got a goal from Gabriel Landeskog while Jan Hejda collected two helpers in a losing cause. The Avs really left their goalie out to the wolves in this game as they were out-shot 51-33 on the night. Oct 29 |
| 3 | Jesse Winchester I.L.Jesse Winchester (concussion) won't be rushed back into the lineup. "We're not going to push on him," coach Patrick Roy said. "We'll follow the protocol and make sure he's 100 percent when he comes up. We're never going to force our players to come back. And we're certainly not going to push them to come back either." It was thought that Winchester could return on Thursday, but the Avalanche have apparently hit the brakes on that. Oct 30 |
| 4 | Patrick Bordeleau I.L.Patrick Bordeleau underwent off-season back surgery. He's expected to miss about three months of the season. Bordeleau picked up 11 points and 115 penalty minutes in 82 games last year as the Avalanche's resident enforcer. Sep 18 |
| 5 | Dennis Everberg ActiveDennis Everberg has been called up by Colorado. He cracked the Avalanche's roster out of training camp and skated in five games with the big club before heading down to the minors. Oct 30 |
D | 1 | Tyson Barrie ActiveTyson Barrie collected three assists in Colorado's 7-3 victory over Vancouver on Friday night. They were on consecutive goals, too. Barrie was played a big part in Colorado's second-fourth goals scored by Jamie McGinn, Erik Johnson and Daniel Briere as the Avs took over the game from the second period onwards. The young defender now has six points on the season. Oct 25 |
| 2 | Erik Johnson ActiveErik Johnson (head) practiced Monday and he's been cleared to play Tuesday. He suffered a head injury in the third period of Sunday's game against Winnipeg and did not return. "I started feeling a lot better last night and this morning," Johnson said. "Things cleared up pretty fast and, I've been down that road before and didn't want to go down it again. I don't want to miss any hockey here." Oct 28 |
| 3 | Jan Hejda ActiveJan Hejda contributed two assists in Colorado's 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Tuesday night. The Avalanche defender has four helpers in 10 games this campaign, with three of them coming in his past three outings. Hejda has some value in deeper leagues that credit real-time stats (29 hits, 17 blocks), but other than that he shouldn't be on your radar. Oct 29 |
| 4 | Nick Holden ActiveColorado Avalanche defenseman Nick Holden is looking to build on the success he had last season. Holden was a surprise contributor for the Avs last season, and is looking to get even better after a strong rookie season. "Last year I had a good opportunity in the last three quarters of the year and I did well with it, but until I can prove myself consistently on a year-by-year basis, I don't see how you can say I'm a bargain guy yet," he said. " I think the best players, the biggest thing they bring is consistency. I don't think you can judge a player off one season, or in my case, three quarters of a season." The 27-year-old registered 10 goals and 25 points in just 55 regular season games last year. Oct 5 |
| 5 | Brad Stuart ActiveBrad Stuart (undisclosed) returned to action on Tuesday October 21. Stuart recorded two penalty minutes and three hits during the contest. He also logged 20:38 minutes of ice time. Oct 22 |
| 6 | Nate Guenin ActiveNate Guenin will draw back into the lineup on Thursday night. He has been a healthy scratch for the past four contests. Guenin will replace Zach Redmond when the Avalanche host the Islanders. He doesn't have a point in four appearances this campaign, but he has posted 10 blocks. Oct 30 |
| 7 | Ryan Wilson SidelinedRyan Wilson is slated to miss two to three weeks because of a shoulder injury. He was injured in Tuesday's game against Florida. Wilson was back in the lineup after missing three games with a suspected head injury. Oct 23 |
| 8 | Zach Redmond ActiveZach Redmond will be in the Colorado Avalanche's lineup Friday night. It will be Redmond's season debut. He had a goal and three points in 10 games with Winnipeg in 2013-14. Oct 24 |
G | 1 | Semyon Varlamov ActiveSemyon Varlamov made 49 saves on 51 shots for Colorado but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Tuesday. Varlamov was outstanding all night long and kept his team in the game all the way until the shootout. The 26 year-old has just one win in his last four games but has backstopped his team to at least a point every one of those games. It appears he isn't the problem for a Colorado team that has started very slowly this year. Oct 29 |
| 2 | Reto Berra ActiveReto Berra stopped 36-of-40 shots fired his way in Colorado's 4-3 OT loss to the Panthers on Tuesday. Berra was peppered with shots early and often and despite giving up the first two goals of the game, he gave his team a chance to win. Berra projects to be the number one goalie until Semyon Varlamov returns from injury. There is some speculation that Varlamov will be able to make Friday's home game against the Canucks. Oct 22 |
