County Council Unanimously Passes Resolution to Speed Up Coldwater Creek Cleanup

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The St. Louis County Council is calling for a quicker cleanup of radioactive waste at the Coldwater Creek site.

The council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night calling for more money for the Army Corps of Engineers to ramp up the effort.

Councilman Sam Page represents that area of north St. Louis County.

“We’re going to demand from our federally elected officials, the Corps of Engineers, the CDC, that all available resources are brought to bear to protect our residents in North St. Louis County,” he says.

Page says the resolution was prompted by a study released by the Missouri Department of Natural resources linking the waste to illnesses, such as childhood brain tumors and leukemia.

“There are residents who have lived there for decades that have noticed that their friends have these strange and unusual cancers, but we couldn’t really make any sot of correlation,” he says. “But we now have some statistically significant data.”

Page says he doesn’t support evacuating residents, but says there’s no reason not to clean up the waste.
