UNT’s progress in creating an equitable, diverse, and inclusive campus community has not gone unnoticed. For the third year in a row, INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine recognized the University of North Texas with the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. The HEED Award is a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. As befitting a “top college for diversity,” the Division’s activities and initiatives have continued to move UNT towards a greater IDEA — inclusion, diversity, equity, and access.
The University of North Texas is now designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), allowing it to receive additional federal funds to support and expand programs for Hispanic students. To become eligible for this status, UNT must have at least 25 percent of its student body be Hispanic, have at least 37% of undergraduate students who are Pell grant eligible, as well as invest substantially in the instruction of all students.
President Smatresk and UNT leaders from across the university worked together to create an action plan to ensure our university better incorporates initiatives targeted at advancing diversity and inclusion on campus.
On January 15, 2021, the College of Engineering was rated by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) as being among the nation's leaders in inclusive excellence. Bronze level recognition was the highest level ASEE issued for the application cycle.
Faculty Success has developed a plan for faculty and academic staff: Anti-Bias & Cultural Awareness Program. The aforementioned plan will serve as a foundation for facilitating an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment for our Mean Green Family and the diverse communities we serve. The plan was created with a scaffolding approach to provide foundational knowledge, intermediate knowledge and implementation, and an advanced execution phase for faculty and academic staff.
In the fall of 2018, UNT distributed its first ever campus-wide climate survey to identify strengths and opportunities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Soon after COVID-19 lockdowns, Diversity & Inclusion moved their expansive library of trainings online.
The MC sponsors and hosts several programs, events, and groups on campus to increase cultural understanding in UNT's diverse community.
