The Gifted Education specialization offers a Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted and Talented Education (GAC-GATE). It is not the same as Texas teacher certification, although the courses do prepare a person to sit for the Texas examination for supplemental certification in gifted education by the state. When completed, this Graduate Academic Certificate is listed on a student’s official transcript.
All four of the certificate courses can be used in various master’s degree plans. It is also possible to complete a GAC-GATE and a master's or doctoral degree simultaneously, provided students apply for them simultaneously. Students who do not want a master’s degree immediately, but seek preparation in gifted education, both individuals within Texas and those from other states or countries, should apply to the UNT Graduate school as Graduate Academic Certificate in Gifted Education (GAC-GATE) candidates.
