The number of adults supervised by the U.S. correctional system dropped for the ninth consecutive year in 2016. At yearend 2016, approximately one in every 38 adults in the United States was under some form of correctional supervision. More than two-thirds (69 percent) of the correctional population were supervised in the community at year-end 2016.
