COVID-19 Information

Country-Specific Information:
- Iceland currently has 124 active cases, with 253 in quarantine and 28 fatalities. A travel ban is ongoing for multiple nations, including the US. Exemptions are available under certain circumstances, for example visiting family members and attending school. A minimum of 2 meters must be kept between individuals at all time. Upon entry into Iceland, travelers must submit to a COVID-19 test and isolate until the results come back, or choose to self-quarantine for 14 days rather than submit to the COVID-19 test.
Entry and Exit Requirements:
- Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? No

- Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? No. COVID-19 tests from other countries are not accepted.
- Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes

Movement Restrictions:
- Is a curfew in place? No
- Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? No
Quarantine Information:
- Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? Yes
- All visitors to Iceland must either submit to a COVID test at the airport and isolate at their designated hotel/house until they receive the results (normally within the same day), or choose to self-quarantine for 14 days. If a US citizen has permission to enter, they must choose one of these options.
COVID-19 Testing:
- COVID testing is conducted at the airport upon arrival. The cost is 11.000ISK. Should a US citizen feel the need to get tested while in Iceland, they can reach out to the local health clinic for advice, and/or reach out directly to the medical hotline at +354-1700.
Transportation Options:
- Are commercial flights operating? Yes, although they are very limited.
- Is public transportation operating? Yes
- If traveling on a bus, passengers must wear a mask if the planned trip takes longer than 30 minutes.
Fines for Non-Compliance:
- While fines have not been confirmed publicly, individuals who are found not to be wearing masks where needed, and who do not respect the two meter rule, may be asked to leave or be escorted out for violating public health rules. Businesses found to be breaking public health rules are reprimanded and/or closed with a possibility of a fine. Individuals who are found to be breaking their self-quarantine are escorted back to their premise, and are fined on the spot, ranging from 50.000ISK to 250.000ISK. Breaking isolation can result in a fine ranging from 150.000ISK to 500.000ISK.
Consular Operations:
- Passport services, Notary services and CRBA services are currently being offered at the US Embassy in Iceland as conditions allow.
- Visa services are available to eligible students and business applicants only. Those include F1, M1 and J1 applicants. Some business applicants may seek a National Interest Exception if they are technical experts or specialists, senior-level managers or executives, and professional athletes and essential staff who enter to participate in major sporting events.
