Brent crude oil spot prices to rise to more than $50 per barrel in 2021 and 2022 mp3
Date: January 12, 2021
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that Brent crude oil spot prices averaged $42 per barrel in 2020, down $23 from 2019. Declining consumption and rising global oil inventories during the first half of 2020 caused spot prices to fall to $18 per barrel in April, the lowest price in real terms since February 1999. However, a rise in oil consumption and limits to production during the second half of the year pushed Brent prices to a monthly average of $50 per barrel in December. In its January Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA expects restrained oil production from members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its partners to keep Brent prices in the mid-$50 per barrel range during the first quarter of 2021. EIA expects global oil consumption and production to rise through 2022 as global oil inventories decline during much of that period. EIA expects that Brent prices will average $53 per barrel in both 2021 and 2022.

LNG exports continue to grow through 2022 mp3
Date: January 12, 2021
Description: The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates that, in 2020, the United States exported an average of 7.6 billion cubic feet per day more natural gas than it imported. Because of rising liquefied natural gas and pipeline exports, the United States has been a net exporter of natural gas since the second quarter of 2017. EIA forecasts net natural gas exports will continue to rise, averaging 9.8 billion cubic feet per day in 2021 and 10.7 billion cubic feet per day in 2022. In its January Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA estimates that the United States exported 9.8 billion cubic feet per day of liquefied natural gas in December, an increase of 0.4 billion cubic feet per day over the previous record set in November 2020. The increase in U.S. LNG exports was driven by rising natural gas prices in Europe and Asia; reduced global supply of LNG resulting from several unplanned outages at LNG export facilities worldwide; and cold weather in key LNG-consuming markets, particularly Asia. U.S. LNG exports are expected to continue to rise through the forecast period, increasing by 30% in 2021 and by 42% in 2022 compared with 2020.

EIA forecasts less power generation from natural gas as a result of rising fuel costs

annual U.S. electric power sector generation by energy source
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration, Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO)

In its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), released on January 12, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts that generation from natural gas-fired power plants in the U.S. electric power sector will decline by about 8% in 2021. This decline would be the first annual decline in natural gas-fired generation since 2017. Forecast generation from coal-fired power plants will increase by 14% in 2021, after declining by 20% in 2020. EIA forecasts that generation from nonhydropower renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, will grow by 18% in 2021—the fastest annual growth rate since 2010.
