The Department of the Interior will issue a Public Land Order (PLO) Jan 19 revoking the withdrawal of approximately 9.7 million acres of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) managed public lands, read how this significant event affects Alaska.

The BLM received 13 bids covering 552,802 acres and totaling $14,412,458 during the first oil and gas lease sale for the Coastal Plain of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The event was broadcast via livestream.

Database systems include: native, state and private land conveyance cases, master title plats, survey plats, as well as, leases, permits, federal mining claims, easements and more.

Placer mining, long a mainstay of Alaska's gold mining industry, still operates today. In addition to gold, silver, zinc, and lead other minerals are also actively mined. BLM Alaska manages more than 5,000 Federal mining claims and 120 active mines and Mining Operation Plans on public lands. The majority of BLM's mineral material sites are for sand and gravel.

The BLM Alaska Fire Service provides wildland suppression services for Department of the Interior agencies, Alaska Native Corporation lands, and military withdrawn public land under an agreement with the U.S. Army-Alaska. It also leads the BLM Alaska’s statewide Fire and Aviation programs.

The Red Devil Mine is an abandoned cinnabar mine and mercury production facility, located on the Kuskokwim River in Southwest Alaska. Mining occurred at the site from 1933 until 1971. During that time, mine operators conducted extensive underground and surface mining and disposed of mine tailings and ore processing wastes at the site. The abandoned mine is the subject of a number of major environmental restoration projects including a CERCLA investigation.

In Alaska, the BLM manages Steese National Conservation Area, a outstanding natural wonder just north of Fairbanks, the Iditarod National Historic Trail which is the only winter trail in the National Trails System and the only Congressionally-designated National Historic Trail in the State, six wild and scenic rivers, and the Central Arctic Management Area Wilderness Study Area.
