Veterans Experiencing Homelessness
About Homeless Programs
About Homeless Programs
In late 2009, VA announced an ambitious goal to end Veteran homelessness. The plan to address this urgent national priority is outlined in Home, Together, the federal strategic plan to prevent and end homelessness. As a result of VA’s close collaboration with local and national stakeholder organizations, success is occurring community by community. State and local governments across the nation have recently announced that they have ended Veteran homelessness, with more communities poised to achieve the same milestone.
The national picture has also improved. The 2019 Point-in-Time (PIT) Count—a “snapshot” of homelessness on a given night in America—shows that homelessness among Veterans is down by nearly 50 percent since 2010, with a 2.1 percent decrease in homelessness among Veterans between 2018 and 2019. Full strategy documents and results reports can be viewed in the resources listed below.

These gains aside, there is more work to do to address the many causes of homelessness among Veterans. VA and its partners are committed to identifying Veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and putting them on the pathway to permanent housing.
