THIS FILE INCLUDES: Rev. 4/96 1. INFORMATION ON ENTREZ 2. GENBANK CD-ROM TITLE ORDER FORM =================================================================== The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) builds, maintains, and distributes the GenBank DNA sequence database. NCBI provides both network and CD-ROM versions of GenBank data. Entrez is a molecular biology database system that presents an integrated view of DNA and protein sequence data, 3D structure data, and associated MEDLINE entries. The system is produced by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), and is available over the Internet and previously on CD-ROM. However, due to the continuing rapid growth in size of GenBank and other sequence databases, the CD-ROM version of Entrez is becoming increasingly unwieldy and inconvenient. The CD-ROM version has lagged far behind the two Internet versions, Network Entrez and Web Entrez, in the number of MEDLINE citations available and in the addition of new databases, including the Genomes division and the Structure division, as well as links to an increasing number of on-line journals. In addition, the two on-line versions of Entrez are now updated daily, compared to the bimonthly CD-ROM updates. Therefore NCBI has decided to discontinue the publication of Entrez on CD-ROM. The last release of the Entrez on CD-ROM will be on August 15, 1996 and new orders and renewals are no longer being accepted. Entrez is now available only through Internet access. Access to the Internet versions of Entrez is easy. If you have a World Wide Web browser, such as Netscape or Mosaic, simply point your browser to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/. The Web version of Entrez has all the capabilities of the CD-ROM version, but with the visual style of the World Wide Web. If you preferred the "look and feel" of the CD-ROM version, you may download Network Entrez from the NCBI's anonymous FTP site: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. Versions are available for PC/Windows, Macintosh and several Unix workstations. For information about Network Entrez, Web Entrez or any other NCBI services, you may contact NCBI by e-mail to info@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov or by phone at 301-496-2475. GenBank Flat File on CD-ROM NCBI will continue to produce the GenBank flat file on CD-ROM. This CD-ROM contains DNA sequence data with translated amino acid sequences in the traditional GenBank flat file format, organized into divisions. No retrieval software is provided. It is available by subscription for $62.00 per year (six releases, four discs per release). Use the order form to order by mail or fax from the Superintendent of Documents at GPO. This five disc CD-ROM set provides GenBank data in the standard flat file format. Each release is cumulative, incorporating all previous GenBank data supplemented by new data from direct submissions, NCBI journal scanning, and the EMBL and DDBJ DNA databases. Conceptual translations of coding regions appear in feature tables. The release contains the standard index files (accession numbers, authors, keywords, gene names, citations). No retrieval software is provided. Software Developers Software developers are advised to contact NCBI via e-mail at 'toolbox@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov' to obtain more information concerning data formats and the availability of software tools and libraries for applications development. Software for manipulating ASN.1 data structures is available through anonymous FTP from 'ncbi.nlm.nih.gov' in the 'toolbox' directory. Ordering Information GPO will handle all subscriptions and subscription-related questions. Telephone orders can be placed at (202) 512-1800. Due to the high volume of telephone ordering, GPO encourages ordering by fax or mail. Quantity discounts of 25% are available for orders of 100 or more CD-ROMs delivered to a single address. We strongly recommend that you use a check, money order or credit card to order your CD-ROM. If you absolutely must use a purchase order, you will need prior approval from the Government Printing Office (GPO). To obtain the necessary approval, call GPO at (202)512-2477 and request "Fill and Bill Application Form #3695". ================================================================================= Superintendent of Documents CD-ROM Subscription Order Form Order processing code: To fax your orders: # 7545 (202)512-2233 To phone your orders: (202)512-1800 |_| YES, enter my order as follows: ___ subscriptions to GenBank (Flat File) on CD-ROM (NCBIF) The total cost of my order is For privacy protection, check the box $__________.
