Care USA (headquartered in Atlanta) and Cargill Incorporated were recognized for their partnership “Nourishing the Future in Central America.” The partnership was one of five finalists for the 4th annual P3 Impact Award in 2017. The P3 Impact Award was presented at the Concordia Summit in September 2017 by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Global Partnerships, the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business Institute for Business in Society, and Concordia. Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs
The Department of State partners with Atlanta-based Cooperative for Assistance Relief Everywhere (CARE) in expanding the reach of Village Saving and Loan Association (VSLA) members. The program reaches from the capital cities of Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda to remote villages, and works to accomplish the objectives of the Partnership on Women's Entrepreneurship in Renewables (wPOWER). Battelle Memorial Institute sponsored nineteen international participants through an OES grant to visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia from May 6 to 9, 2018 to learn about U.S. expertise in the fundamentals of crisis and emergency risk education and communication regarding mosquito-borne diseases. The Mission Mosquito program, which runs from October 2017 to August 2019, will establish a self-sustaining international network among community leaders and trusted health practitioners, scientists, journalists, and educators to spur innovation in public engagement, and develop/implement communication strategies and follow-on programming that drive impactful and locally appropriate solutions.

Researchers from Emory University received funding from the Pakistan-U.S. Science and Technology Cooperation program, which seeks to facilitate scientific cooperation between scientists in the two countries, thus benefiting U.S.-based researchers in selected areas. The researchers worked with their Pakistani counterparts to submit a joint project proposal that was merit reviewed by representatives from both countries and selected for funding.

Researcher from Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Maryland received grants from the OES-supported U.S.-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) for joint research projects with Israeli scientists. A company from Georgia received a grant from the OES-supported U.S.-Israel Binational Industrial Research and Development Foundation (BIRD) for a joint venture with an Israeli company. Selected through a competitive process, the BIRD funding generates mutually beneficial cooperation between U.S. and Israeli companies.
A researcher from the University of Maryland was awarded funds from the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum to conduct a workshop related to cooperation between the United States and India on investigation of the Indian Ocean.

The New York Foreign Press Center hosted a press briefing for the President and CEO of the Savannah Economic Development Authority and Senior Director of Economic Development for the Georgia Ports Authority to discuss economic development and trade through the Port of Savannah with foreign correspondents. The Port of Savannah, the nation’s fastest growing and fourth largest, can serve 80% of the U.S. population within two days. Nearly 75% of imports/exports from the Savannah Port are from Asia.

The Department works with nine domestic non-governmental organizations, which place refugees with more than 325 affiliates in roughly 190 communities around the country. These local affiliates work closely with community partners, congregations, volunteers, and state and local officials to provide a successful start for refugees rebuilding their lives. Refugee communities have historically enhanced the economic dynamism and cultural vitality of our nation. Refugees contribute to the United States in numerous ways, including by starting businesses and joining the U.S. military. Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs
Banyan Communications, an Atlanta-based communications and web-design firm, was awarded a contract to produce an online version of the Universal Treatment Curriculum, an INL-funded set of courses that promote the use of evidence-based best practices in treatment for substance use disorders.
Since 2014, the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs has partnered with the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to train police at the International Law Enforcement Academies (ILEA) in countering bias-motivated crimes (hate crimes). In 2018, INL launched additional cooperative activities with APD to train judges, prosecutors and police officers at ILEA Budapest and ILEA San Salvador.

Through a partnership with the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsythe, Georgia, the INL provides training to law enforcement professionals from the Republic of Georgia. Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons
In Fiscal Year 2017, the Bureau of Consular Affairs issued visas to 190 children who were adopted by U.S. citizens from Georgia. Intercountry adoption is one CA's highest priorities. CA's Office of Children’s Issues plays an active role in the intercountry adoption process and works diligently to establish and maintain intercountry adoption as a viable option throughout the world.

Diplomatic Security Miami Field Office serves Georgia: Diplomatic Security has offices throughout the United States staffed with special agents and contract investigators, who conduct criminal, counterterrorism and background investigations. Agents assigned to field and resident offices assist in providing support to the protection of the Secretary of State, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and visiting foreign dignitaries. Liaison with federal and local law enforcement, foreign mission personnel, local officials, and the private sector complements their major responsibilities.

In February 2017, Japan’s Kubota Manufacturing of America Corporation (KMA) began producing utility vehicles at a new facility in Gainesville with capacity to produce up to 75,000 vehicles annually. In August 2017, Rinnai, a Japan-based home appliances manufacturer, announced it will create 150 jobs and invest $69 million with the completion of the company’s first U.S. manufacturing facility in Griffin, Georgia. Rinnai expects to create 300 jobs with this new facility over the next 10 years. The Department of State, in partnership with agencies across the federal government, creates jobs for American workers by opening markets and eliminating trade barriers overseas and by attracting foreign direct investment to the United States. In 2018, goods exported totaled $40.5 billion. Those exports supported approximately 181,731 Georgian jobs (2016) and foreign direct investment into Georgia supports an additional 239,200 jobs (2016).

The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs advocates in meetings of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) for conservation of pollinators, which contribute $24 billion to the national economy and $795 million to the economy of the state of Georgia for cotton and hundreds of millions more for other agricultural products such as melons, blueberries, cucumbers, peaches, and many others.

The Thomas R. Pickering and Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship Programs encourage applications from minority groups historically underrepresented in the U.S. Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. Each fellowship provides financial assistance towards the completion of a two year master’s degree in a field related to the Foreign Service, academic funding, mentorship and two internships – one in the U.S. and the other abroad at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Fellows commit to a minimum of five years in the Foreign Service. Currently, there are 56 active participants from the state of Georgia.

Office of Global Partnerships
One high school student from Georgia participated in the first-ever WiSci Girls STEAM Camp in Gashora, Rwanda, which brought 30 American and 90 African girls together for a three week curriculum in computer science, robotics, leadership, and social enterprise during summer 2015. Part of the Let Girls Learn Initiative, the goal of WiSci is to empower young women with the knowledge and skillsets to be competitive with their male counterparts during a time of rapid, technological development, providing them with access to high-tech resources, like-minded peers, impactful business connections and inspiring mentors. Conger Enterprises, LLC received $21,356 to develop and conduct a root cause analysis training course for international experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to provide the experts with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate an effective problem analysis. U.S. Embassy Managua sent 10 exceptional and economically-disadvantaged Access and College Horizons students on a 10-week Total English Immersion Program to Georgia State University. Students improved their English-language skills and cultural understanding of the United States. English provides an opportunity for increased economic opportunities in Nicaragua, reducing the likelihood of immigration.

Georgia Southern University and Universidade de Brasilia (Brazil) are collaborating to create a new, bilateral study abroad experience that will provide students with innovative, hands-on and experiential learning activities and enable them to reflect on their new cultural and technical knowledge in the fields of political science, sociology, and chemistry. GSU students will participate in a series of summer courses at UnB to learn about sustainable technology practices and federal policies in Brazil, while UnB students will take courses at GSU to engage in all aspects of scientific research and training techniques. Georgia Southern University and Universidad Anáhuac Mayab (Mexico) are creating a new generation of a two-way summer study abroad programs by expanding on an existing partnership. Exchanges focus on innovative hands-on and service learning activities. Students from both universities use laser-based scanning instruments to produce 3D point-cloud models of selected structures, such as a millenary Mayan ruin or modern structures to control coastal erosion. The U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Peruvian Ministry of Education awarded scholarships to 30 Peruvians to travel to the United States to participate in different programs at 24 U.S. universities.
