The National Cyber Strategy
On September 20, 2018, the White House released the National Cyber Strategy which outlines the steps the U.S. government is taking to advance an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure cyberspace. The National Cyber Strategy builds on and is informed by the work performed in response to Executive Order 13800 issued on May 11, 2017, Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure .
The Department of State worked with colleagues across the federal government to produce recommendations for the President pursuant to Executive Order 13800. On May 31, 2018, the State Department released summaries of two reports that provided recommendations for the President on securing America’s cyber interests and deterring cyber adversaries by engaging international partners on these critical domestic and foreign policy imperatives.

The State Department is spearheading action items in the National Cyber Strategy, primarily organized around two broad policy goals: (1) to promote acceptance and adherence to the U.S.-developed framework of responsible state behavior in cyberspace, and (2) to advance an open, interoperable, reliable, and secure cyberspace that benefits U.S. interests and promotes U.S. values.
Through its diplomatic efforts, international engagement, and coordination on behalf of the U.S. government, the State Department advances U.S. objectives in cyberspace to ensure that the Internet and other connected technologies remain valuable and viable tools for future generations.
