U.S.-SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES RELATIONS
The United States established diplomatic relations with Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in 1981 following its independence from the United Kingdom. Relations between the United States and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are friendly. The United States supports the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' efforts to expand its economic base and to provide a higher standard of living for its citizens. Both governments are concerned with eradicating local marijuana cultivation and combating the transshipment of narcotics. The two countries have signed a maritime law enforcement agreement, an extradition treaty, and a mutual legal assistance treaty.
The United States maintains no official presence in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The Ambassador and Embassy officers are resident in Barbados and travel frequently to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
U.S. Assistance to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
U.S. assistance to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is channeled primarily through multilateral agencies such as the World Bank. U.S. Peace Corps volunteers in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines work in business development, education, and health. The U.S. military provides assistance through construction and humanitarian civic action projects. The United States provides training, equipment, and material to Vincentian security and defense forces, including through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative.
Bilateral Economic Relations
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a beneficiary of the U.S. Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI), which grants duty-free entry into the United States for many goods. The CBI aims to facilitate the economic development and export diversification of the Caribbean Basin economies. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a member of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM). At the 2012 meeting of the U.S.-CARICOM Trade and Investment Council, the parties approved an action agenda outlining priorities for strengthening and deepening the trading relationship.
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' Membership in International Organizations
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the United States belong to a number of the same international organizations, including the United Nations, Organization of American States, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and World Trade Organization.
