Have You Seen This Snail?
The Giant African Land Snail (GALS) has been smuggled into the US in the pet trade and for religious purposes. The snail harbors human parasites and damages crops and structures. Florida has been working since 2011 to eradicate this serious pest from Miami. A state program has joined with alert home owners to vanquish the snails. The program has cost Floridians millions of dollars. Canine detectors are being trained to locate snails. It will be years before the snails might be considered eradicated.
