Changes to Access Salem VAMC & Visitor Information

The Salem VA Medical Center (SVAMC) and its community-based outpatient clinics are actively screening everyone at entrances to ensure that we are maintaining as safe an environment as possible. Please allow for the additional screening time if you have an in-person appointment. Thank you for your cooperation and attention to the following information as we work together to end the spread of COVID-19.

Effective May 14, 2020, all patients and others seeking access to the SVAMC campus for health care or other business purposes will be directed to use the West Gate (near Arnold Burton School). This will include all public transportation. The gate will be open 24/7 to include Weekends/Holidays/Evenings and Nights.

Everyone entering the campus will be screened and must wear a face covering at all times while at the facility. We encourage patients to bring their own face covering if they have one but one will provide one if necessary. Patients who have previously diagnosed clinical conditions which prevent them from wearing a face covering should consult their provider.

Inpatient Areas: Visitation to the Community Living Center and all inpatient care units has been temporarily suspended. NOTE: Extenuating circumstances may apply for patients in Palliative, Hospice or Critical Care Units.  Please contact the nurse’s station in these areas to discuss limitations. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed in any area of the facility except under exceptional circumstances, such as Veterans who may rely on drivers under the age of 18.

Outpatient areas: We recommend Video Virtual Care, Telehealth and telephone appointments for patients who do not need an in-person appointment and when clinically appropriate. This will be discussed with you at the time of scheduling your appointment. Patients may bring (1) one caregiver/family member to their appointment if necessary to provide assistance during their appointment. At the conclusion of the appointment, patients are asked to leave the grounds to allow us to maintain physical distancing. Waiting rooms have been redesigned to specifically allow for physical distancing.

Safe care is our Mission and we appreciate your help by wearing a face covering, maintaining physical distance and using alternatives to in-person visits when appropriate. Together, we will achieve a safe environment for everyone!
