Earning the ENERGY STAR means products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. By choosing ENERGY STAR certified commercial space and water heating equipment and taking steps to optimize its performance, you can enhance the comfort of your space while saving energy. Saving energy helps you save money on utility bills and protect the climate by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
ENERGY STAR certified commercial boilers have a thermal efficiency of ≥ 94.0% and a turndown ratio of 5:1. Thermal efficiency is the ratio of the heat energy (Btu/hr) absorbed by the water to the heat energy available in the fuel burned. The turndown ratio is the boiler’s maximum nameplate firing rate (Btu/hr) divided by its lowest nameplate firing rate (Btu/hr). A boiler system with a higher turndown ratio is better able to adjust to the heating needs of the space, providing both the least fuel use and a steady, even heating for occupant comfort.
The ENERGY STAR is available on smaller packaged boiler models (<2 MBtu/hr), which would be used by themselves for smaller heating needs or combined with other boilers for larger heating needs. Talk to your engineer or contractor to make sure that you are getting the right boiler system for your particular need.
ENERGY STAR certified commercial boilers achieve greater efficiency than standard models. Purchasers will find average savings of 14 percent and more than $1,000 in energy cost savings per year. If all commercial boilers sold in the United States were ENERGY STAR certified, the energy cost savings would grow to more than $1 billion and 23 billion pounds of annual greenhouse gas emissions would be prevented, equivalent to the emissions of over 2 million vehicles.
