Gangs in Indian Country

Who Should Attend

This three-day class provides basic, entry-level training to tribal law enforcement officers newly assigned to work with street gangs who have limited experience, but little formal training in street gang investigations. Tribal law enforcement officers will be given priority for attendance, but the class is also appropriate for local officers who routinely work with tribal authorities.

  • Gangs 101—basic information necessary to understand street gangs

  • Native American Gangs: Trends and Dynamics—national overview of Native American gangs and the influence of gang activity in tribal communities

  • Regional Gang Overview—specific gangs affecting tribal lands in the region in which the class is held

  • Interviewing Gang Members—basic interview and interrogation techniques for officers dealing with gang members

  • Gang Intelligence—the intelligence process and the role of gang investigators in the process

  • Responding to Tribal Gang Crime Scenes—techniques for identifying potential gang involvement at common crime scenes

  • Gang Suppression—strategies and tactics that have been effective in suppressing gang activity

  • Gang Investigations—unique nature of gang investigations and gang crime scenes

  • Legal Considerations—use of tribal and gang-specific legislation in the investigation and prosecution of gang crime
