  • On July 15 - 17, 2019, PSERC hosted the Summer Workshop to offer a stimulating and productive time for developing new research and education initiatives.  Meetings focus on the three stem research areas of Markets, Systems, and T&D Technologies to engage attendees in conversations that will influence and help define proposal solicitation, research plans, and specific project ideas.  The workshop was held in Sedona, AZ.

  • On November 13-14, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little was the opening speaker and a panelist on a Grid Infrastructure panel at the Southwest Energy Consortium Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ.

  • On November 13-14, 2019, Melissa Pauley, Electricity Policy Analyst and Program Manager for the U.S. Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative, represented DOE at the 8th annual U.S. C3E Women in Clean Energy Symposium at Texas A&M University. The nine awardees for the annual U.S. C3E awards were announced at the Symposium, which also features other high-level speakers and panels on energy topics. The U.S. C3E program is administered by DOE in partnership with the Texas A&M Energy Institute, MIT Energy Initiative, and Stanford Energy’s Precourt Institute for Energy.   • On November 4, 2019, David Wells sat on a panel at Resilience Week 2019 in San Antonio, TX. The panel was titled Communications Industry Special Session: Emergency Communications which covered the potential impacts to energy critical infrastructure if 6GHz spectrum band for unlicensed use is adopted.

  • On October 29-30, 2019, Senior Advisor David Wells presented at the North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI) working group meeting. He presented on the Darknet project and provided an overview and details of the project. The event was held in Richmond, VA.

  • On October 29, 2019, Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Pesin was the keynote speaker at the Smart Grid Customer Education Symposium in Washington, DC. Mr. Pesin was providing the federal perspective on grid modernization and how OE's key priorities support utility customers.

  • On October 29, 2019, Sandra Jenkins provided remarks at the North American SynchroPhasor Initiative (NASPI) Work Group Meeting & Vendor Show in Richmond, VA. She covered a status update of OE's previously awarded Funding Opportunity Announcement 1861, Big Data Analysis of Synchrophasor Data.

  • On October 29, 2019, Eric Hsieh spoke at the Innovations in Mobility conference in Novi, MI, hosted by the SAE International. The conference explored future technology development in smart mobility infrastructure and advanced propulsion, including batteries, battery charging and materials. Mr. Hsieh discussed interactions between electrified mobility and the grid.

  • On October 23-25, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little represented DOE and presented on Critical Energy Infrastructure activity at the NCSL Legislative Energy Institute Meeting in Washington, DC.

  • On October 16-18, 2019, Jennifer DeCesaro participated in the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) and facilitated a panel session, "The Resilient Island Playbook," on Friday, October 18. The event was held in Miami, FL.

  • On October 16, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker provided an update on OE programs and initiatives at the Electricity Advisory Committee (EAC) meeting. Other topics included panel discussions on energy storage deployment case studies and impediments to leveraging phasor measurement unit (PMU) data and synchrophasors. Eric Hsieh of the Advanced Grid Research and Development division also provided an update on the proposed Advanced Energy Storage Initiative. This meeting is the third of the three EAC meetings held annually. The two-day meeting was held in Arlington, VA.

  • On October 8, 2019, Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Pesin provided remarks at the GridFWD 2019 conference in Seattle, WA. Mr. Pesin provided the federal perspective on supporting grid R&D on a panel titled, Expanding Early Success into Full Deployment. He was joined on the panel by John Gibson, Chief R&D Engineer, Avista; Carl Imhoff, Manager, Electricity Market Sector, PNNL; and Mark Duvall, Director of Energy Utilization, EPRI.

  • On October 8, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little spoke on the current status of DOE’s Critical Energy Infrastructure project at the Joint Committee on Regional Electric Power Cooperation and Western Interstate Regional Advisory Board Meeting in San Diego, CA.

  • On October 3, 2019, David Wells sat on two panels at the Utility Broadband Alliance Summit in Birmingham, Alabama. The panels included Resiliency and Security in the "Digital" Utility Grid of the Future, moderated by Rachelle Chong, Former CPUC and FCC Commissioner; and Private Broadband: A Spectrum of Possibilities, moderated by Richelle Elberg, Navigant.

  • On September 30, 2019, Kerry Cheung gave a presentation titled “Increasing Grid Security and Resilience through Next-Generation Hardware” at the 2019 IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Expo (ECCE) held in Baltimore, MD. His session also featured Isik Kizilyalli (ARPA-E), Anil Pahwa (NSF), Lynn Peterson (ONR), Vladimir Blasko (UTRC), Liuchen Chang (University of New Brunswick), and Mark Xu (Zhejiang University).

  • On September 17-20, 2019, Jennifer DeCesaro participated in the Pacific Energy and Transport Ministers Meeting organized by the Pacific Community. The event was held in Apia, Samoa.

  • On September 17, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker attended the Microgrids and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Summit Creating a Dynamic, Resilient, and Sustainable Energy Future annual event in Alexandria, Virginia, hosted by the Roosevelt Strategic Council. The prime objective of the forum was to allow for the efficient interchange of knowledge among a variety of stakeholders in the public and private energy sectors. A/S Walker delivered the opening remarks regarding improving reliability and resiliency in an expanding, decentralized grid.

  • On September 17, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little spoke at the NASEO Annual Meeting in Manhattan Beach, CA. The panel was entitled “Resilience Frameworks for the Grid, Fuels and Mission Critical Facilities: Supporting States, Communities, and Local Governments.”

  • On September 17, 2019, Joe Paladino presented at the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) 2019 Annual Meeting in Manhattan Beach, CA. Mr. Paladino was speaking on two panels; one on grid-focused analytical work that can be applied at the regional level, and the second on OE-led resilience efforts including NAERM and the Distribution System Resilience Decision Framework.

  • On September 13, 2019, the OE Transmission Planning and Technical Assistance Division (TPTA) organized a second stakeholder workshop on integrated distribution system planning for the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The workshop supports a formal regulatory process for the development of an integrated distribution system plan for Puerto Rico. This second workshop will focus on best and emerging practices that can be applied to enable customers and third parties to participate in utility planning and grid operations; the intent is to form stakeholder-driven working groups that will ultimately provide recommendations to PREB on several key topics. PREB specifically requested assistance from the Department based on TPTA’s efforts with many states on advancing integrated planning and grid modernization processes. Joe Paladino from TPTA presented at the workshop.

  • On September 13, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker attended the Veterans in Energy National Forum. He participated in a panel on base resiliency moderated by Hal Pittman, Dir. Of Military and Veteran Engagement. The other panelists included Jason Smith, GM Bright Canyon Energy; Jack Surash, Acting - DAS of the Army, Energy and Sustainability; and Mark Correll, DAS of the Air force for Environment, Safety, and Infrastructure. The forum was held at the Hilton Washington DC National Mall Hotel.

  • On September 10, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker attended the House National Laboratory Caucus Lunch Briefing on Capitol Hill. Assistant Secretary Walker provided the keynote on energy storage. There was then a panel on storage with Jud Virden (PNNL), Joe Zhou (Quidnet), Jason Houck (Form Energy), and Kyle Davis (ENEL). The meeting location was Rayburn House Office Building.

  • On August 21, 2019, Dr. Imre Gyuk participated in a webinar entitled "New York’s Energy Storage Roadmap and Other Initiatives." Other panelists included representatives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), NY Department of Public Service, and Clean Energy States Alliance. The webinar was hosted by the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP), an OE-funded project that aims to accelerate the deployment of electrical energy storage technologies in the U.S.

  • On August 14-15, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker spoke at the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Member Representatives Committee meeting and Board of Trustees meeting.  He provided updates regarding DOE efforts with NERC, including GridEx, and his plans/activities related to reliability, security and resilience.  Attendees included over 150 people including NERC Board of Trustees and NERC management staff, NERC’s registered entities (owners, operators and users of the bulk power system) electricity trade association representatives, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) staff and representatives from the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC).  The meetings were held in Quebec City, Canada.

  • On August 13-14, 2019, OE’s Transformer Resilience and Advanced Components (TRAC) Program held a peer review.  External reviewers from industry and academia reviewed the projects under this program and made recommendations on how to improve the program.  This event was held at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility in Oak Ridge, TN. 

  • On August 12, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little delivered remarks on the reliability and resilience of the bulk power system at the Transmission and Wholesale Markets school sponsored by EEI and the University of Wisconsin, in Madison, Wisconsin.

  • On July 30, 2019, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman spoke at the Dentons Global Energy Horizons Summit.  She discussed the sea of changes facing the energy sector.  The audience included about 70-100 people and other summit speakers included Former National Security Advisor Gen. James. L. Jones, Former Secretary of Energy Dr. Ernest Moniz, CEO of CPS Energy Paula Gold-Williams, and Former CTO of the USDOE Pete Tseronis.  The Summit was held in Washington, DC.

  • On July 25, 2019, Eric Hsieh participated on a panel titled “The Future of Energy Storage” at Hydrovision in Portland, Oregon. The panel discussed market conditions and drivers that currently affect the interplay of the economics of energy storage, carbon-free flexible capacity and ancillary services.

  • On July 21-23, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little represented the Office of Electricity at the NARUC Summer Policy Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • On July 8-10, 2019, Kerry Cheung, Program Manager, and Sandy Jenkins, Engineer, represented OE at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit. There was a government networking session and a booth to showcase OE’s R&D activities. The Summit was held in Denver, CO.

  • On June 26, 2019, Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Advanced Grid R&D, discussed OE's priorities and his insights gained from managing OE’s R&D portfolio at the Roosevelt Strategic Council's Digital Intelligence for Energy Summit.  The 2019 Summit focused on issues related to the use of big data in the energy sector:  This event was held in Alexandria, VA.

  • On June 24, 2019, Kerry Cheung, Program Manager, serve on a panel at the IEEE 14th International Conference on Transmission and Distribution Construction, Operation, and Live-Line Maintenance.  Hel discussed OE’s activities in grid security and resilience with an emphasis on physical security and hardware solutions.  The conference was held in Columbus, OH.

  • On June 19-21, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little attended the National Association of State Utility Consumer Advocates Mid-Year Meeting.  This conference  provided a venue for discussion of national and regional issues of interest to electric, water, and gas utilities.  The meeting was held in Portland, OR.

  • On June 19, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker provided an update on OE programs and initiatives at the Electricity Advisory Committee (EAC) meeting.  Other topics included an update by Assistant Secretary Daniel Simmons on EERE programs relevant to the EAC and a presentation on the Electric Power Research Institute’s Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) report.  This meeting was the second of the three EAC meetings held annually.  A Federal Register Notice announcing the meeting was published on May 24.  The two-day meeting was held in Arlington, VA.

  • On June 11-13, 2019, OE’s Transmission Reliability Program hold a Peer Review.  External reviewers from industry and academia  reviewed the projects under this program and make recommendations on how to improve the program.  This event was held in Washington, DC.

  • On June 10-12, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little attended the American Public Power Association Annual Meeting and delivered remarks on state trends in their energy generation portfolios.  This meeting was an opportunity for public power utilities to learn more about the complex issues they face in both the near term and long term.  The meeting was held in Austin, TX.

  • On June 10, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker participated in a panel at the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) Convention in Philadelphia, PA.  Assistant Secretary Walker  discussed the strategic importance of energy storage for DOE and the Nation, and OE’s R&D efforts.  Attendees included over 1,000 senior executives and electric company CEOs.

  • On June 10, 2019, Dr. Imre Gyuk participated in EPA’s Green Chemistry Challenge Awards ceremony where Urban Electric Power (UET), City College of New (CCNY), and Sandia National Laboratories received an award for the development and commercialization of an advanced Zinc Manganese (Zn-MnO2) battery. While Zn-MnO2 batteries are commercially available, the work funded by OE has resulted in a rechargeable battery. This is the second Green Chemistry Challenge Award received by an OE-funded project. PNNL and UniEnergy Technologies received the award in 2017 for developing an advanced vanadium flow battery. This event was held at EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC.

  • On June 10, 2019, Dr. Imre Gyuk participated in a webinar entitled “Massachusetts' Municipal Utility Energy Storage Projects: Examples from Sterling, Templeton, and Wakefield”. Other panelists included representatives from the Sterling Municipal Light Department, Templeton Municipal Light & Water, and Wakefield Municipal Gas & Light. The webinar was hosted by the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP), an OE-funded project that aims to accelerate the deployment of energy storage technologies in the U.S.

  • On June 7, 2019, Dr. Imre Gyuk, Energy Storage Program Manager, attended the commissioning of a new OE-funded energy storage facility in Cordova, AK. The 1MW/1MWh hour Li-Ion battery will support hydroelectric development by the Cordova Electricity Cooperative, absorbing electricity during low load periods and discharging when there is high demand. Batteries will also provide frequency regulation and back-up for maintenance outages of the hydro system. Senator Lisa Murkowski was a guest of honor at the ceremony.

  • On June 4, 2019, Michael Pesin, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Advanced Grid R&D (AGR&D), discussed the strategic objectives of the AGR&D technology portfolio and how it supports OE's mission to strengthen America's energy resilience during a panel at the Mexican Energy Forum.  The forum brought together thought leaders and key decision makers from across North America to discuss regional energy issues.  This event was held in in Mexico City, Mexico.

  • On June 3-5, 2019, Senior Advisor Doug Little attended the Western Conference of Public Service Commissioners Annual Meeting.  This event provided a venue for dialogue on regional energy, transmission planning, water, and communications issues.  It was held in Cheyenne, WY.

  • May 24, 2019, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transmission Permitting and Technical Assistance (TPTA) Katie Jereza moderated a panel of Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) Ambassadors and Awardees on advancing women in clean energy at the IEEE Women in Energy International Leadership Conference. The event was held in Austin, TX.

  • May 8-9, 2019, Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker attended the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Member Representatives Committee and Board of Trustees meeting and provided an update on DOE priorities and activities. Attendees included over 150 representatives from the NERC Board of Trustees, NERC management, NERC-registered entities (owners, operators, and users of the bulk power system), electricity trade associations, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). The event was held in St. Louis, MO.

  • April 30, 2019, Dan Ton, Microgrid R&D Program Manager, discussed OE’s microgrid program and activities for enhanced grid reliability and resilience at the United States Energy Association.

  • April 16, 2019 - Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman provided the keynote at the Gulf Coast Power Association Spring Conference in Houston, TX.  She discussed her responsibilities leading OE, future challenges (e.g., cybersecurity and gas supply disruptions), and ways in which different technologies address reliability. 

  • April 16, 2-3 pm EST – The Power Systems Engineering Research Center, sponsored by the Department of Energy, hosted a webinar titled “PMU Data Analytics for the Resilient Electric Grid.” Anurag K. Srivastava, associate professor of electric power engineering at WSU and the director of the Smart Grid Demonstration and Research Investigation Lab (SGDRIL), discussed how data from phasor measurement units (PMUs) is generated and monitored ubiquitously in smart grids, but largely unexploited in discovering knowledge and new solutions for critical power grid applications to enhance the resiliency of the smart grid.

  • April 9, 2019, David Meyer, Senior Advisor, discussed the Department’s Report to Congress on net energy metering during a webinar hosted by the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) entitled “Net Energy Metering, Distributed Solar, and Rate Design”. The other speakers were Steve Fine, Vice President of Distributed Energy Resources at ICF, who discussed ICF’s analysis for DOE entitled “Review of Recent Cost-Benefit Studies Related to Net Metering and Distributed Solar” and Tom Stanton, Principal Researcher for Energy and Environment at the National Regulatory Research Institute (NRRI), who discussed NRRI’s “Review of State Net Energy Metering and Successor Rate Designs”. The presentations were followed by a Q&A moderated by Warren Leon, Executive Director at CESA. The webinar was recorded and posted on the CESA website.

  • April 3-5, 2019, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) and the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) Task Force on Comprehensive Electricity Planning held its first workshop in Denver, CO. The objective was to assess current planning approaches and begin to define the essential components for integrated planning practices. Task Force members represent public utility commissions and state energy offices of Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Utah, and Virginia. The Task Force was recently formed to better align the practices of resource planning with distribution system planning. OE is working with NARUC and NASEO to organize the effort and provide technical assistance.

  • March 28, 2019 - Security Investments for Energy Infrastructure Technical Conference – DOE and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) co-hosted a technical conference to discuss security practices to protect energy infrastructure.  The technical conference was held at FERC Headquarters and was open and free to the public.

  • March 26, 2-3 pm EST – The Power Systems Engineering Research Center, sponsored by the Department of Energy, hosted a webinar titled “Opportunities and Challenges for Probabilistic Models of Cascading Line Outages Driven by Historical Utility Data.” Ian Dobson, professor of electrical engineering at Iowa State University, discussed how to use probabilistic models describing cascading outages to direct mitigation efforts. The webinar was free and did not require registration.

  • March 26, 1-2pm ET Energy Storage 101, Part 1: Battery Storage Technology, Systems and Cost Trends. This first in a multi-part energy storage webinar series covered the state of the technology, energy storage systems and cost trends. The energy storage team at Sandia National Laboratories has combined lessons learned from numerous battery deployment projects and analyses to create this webinar series overview. Future installments in the series will cover such topics as applications and economics, policy and regulations, safety and reliability, and project development, commissioning and deployment. Presenters include, Dr. Imre Gyuk, Director of Energy Storage Research, U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity and Dan Borneo, Engineering Project Manager, Sandia National Laboratories; moderated by Todd Olinsky-Paul, Project Director, Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA).   • March 20-21 2019, OE, along with the Electric Power Research Institute and the Resnick Sustainability Institute at Caltech, will held a Future Distribution Grid R&D Workshop in Charlotte, NC to examine current trends and their impact on distribution system planning and operations over the next 15 years.

  • March 19, 2019 1 - 2pm ET - Evaluating Technology Impacts on the Distribution System: PNNL’s GridLAB-D Simulation Tool. Historically, the inability to effectively model and evaluate smart grid technologies has been a barrier to adoption. GridLAB-D, a distribution technology simulation software tool developed by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Electricity, aims to help users overcome this challenge by providing valuable modeling information to those that want to take advantage of smart-grid technologies. During this webinar, Frank Tuffner, a Research Engineer at PNNL, presented the GridLAB-D simulation software tool and shared its potential applications.

  • March 18, 2019 - Chatham House Energy Transitions Conference - Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Patricia Hoffman participated in a panel at the Chatham House Energy Transitions Conference.  The focus of the panel trended towards electrification in terms of heating, industry, and transportation; whether full electrification was realizable and/or desirable in specific cases; and implications for efficiency and emissions reduction.  The other panelists will include Laura Cozzi, Chief Energy Modeller at the International Energy Agency; Morten Bæk, Vice Minister for Energy, Utilities and Climate in Denmark; and Rikard Gaarder Knutsen, Deputy Minister of  the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy.

  • March 14, 2019 - North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s (NERC) Reliability Leadership Summit –  Assistant Secretary Bruce J. Walker discussed OE’s modeling and critical electric infrastructure priorities, and reliability challenges facing the bulk power system.  More than 100 members of the reliability community attended the Summit, including senior industry leaders from electric utilities, generators, market operators, state and federal officials, NERC executives, and board members.
     
  • March 14, 2019 - NAATBatt 2019 Annual Meeting and Conference – Dr. Imre Gyuk, Office of Electricity Director of Energy Storage Research, moderated a panel discussion entitled “Can Zinc, Sodium and Redox Flow Batteries Challenge Lithium-Ion in the Market?” Panelists included Randy Moore, ZAF Energy Systems; Erik Spoerke, Sandia National Laboratories; and Gary Yang, UniEnergy Technologies.
  • March 13-14, 2019 - DOE Electric Advisory Committee – Assistant Secretary Bruce Walker provided an update on OE programs and initiatives to members of DOE and EAC Leadership.  The meeting was held in Arlington, VA and was the first of three EAC meetings held annually.  The mission of the EAC is to provide advice to DOE in implementing the Energy Policy Act of 2005, executing the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and modernizing the nation's electricity delivery infrastructure.  

  • March 7-8, 2019 - OE hosted a two-day workshop in Washington, DC for officials representing the energy offices and public utility commissions of the Mid-Atlantic States and the District of Columbia on the fundamentals of distribution system operations and emerging practices in integrated planning.  This workshop was the fifth in a series which has provided distribution system training to officials from over 40 states.  The training intends to provide fundamental technical information to state officials who are responsible for providing guidance to utilities, as well as oversight, on distribution system plans that often need to address advancements in technology and policy.

  • March 6, 2019 - 2019 Energy Storage Systems (ESS) Safety and Reliability Forum – Dr. Imre Gyuk, Office of Electricity Director of Energy Storage Research, provided opening remarks at the OE-sponsored event in Albuquerque, NM.  The Forum provided a venue for discussing the current state of ESS safety and mitigation strategies for improving cell to system-level safety and reliability.

  • February 21, 2019 - Designing Solar+Storage to Power Critical Loads: New Features in NREL’s REopt Lite Tool – The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has added important new features to its free solar+storage (and now +wind) online optimization tool, REopt Lite, that will help building owners, energy managers, and emergency planners assess a building’s technology needs to power essential services with onsite resources during grid disruptions. Kate Anderson, who leads the Modeling and Analysis Group at NREL, will provide an overview of REopt Lite and Andrew Jeffery, REopt Lite user interface developer, will introduce the new features. This will be followed by a demonstration of the Critical Load Builder by Clean Energy Group vice president and project director, Seth Mullendore.

  • Exploring the Outcomes of New Grid Projects on the Power System: PNNL's GridPIQ Tool - January 31, 2019, 1-2pm ET - Insight about how grid technology performs can be tough to get quickly. Results – like cost and energy savings, peak shaving, ramping requirements, and fossil fuel usage – depend heavily on usage, energy mix, geography, and consumer behavior. GridPIQ, a screening tool from the U.S. Department of Energy and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), helps users approximate the impact of adding a grid project, whether in the form of a technology or a new policy, to an existing system. On this webinar, Karen Studarus, the tool developer from PNNL, will provide an overview of GridPIQ and step through some use cases to demonstrate how GridPIQ can provide a first-pass assessment as you evaluate technology and policy options. Karen and her team are also interested in hearing your feedback on the tool as well as your input into what you wish it could do in the future!

  • Reliability Considerations in Cyber-Power Dependent Systems - April 17, 2018, 2 p.m. EST - A PSERC Webinar focusing on the interdependent cyber-power reliability modeling under cyber unavailability and cyber threats. The effect of the cyber system on power system performance will be addressed using reliability measures such as energy not served, IEEE Std. 1366 based reliability measures and total cost of operations. To effectively compute the power system reliability in presence of complex communication infrastructure, worst case reliability computation approach will be discussed. Finally, the effect of cyber system on power system operations would be discussed using operations and planning examples especially at the distribution level.   • The Status of State Grid Modernization Efforts - March 9, 2018, 1 pm ET - The RPS Collaborative, which is managed by the Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) with support from the Energy Foundation and the Office of Electricity (OE), hosted a free the status of state grid modernization efforts. Two presentations discussed the range of activity taking place at the state level. Autumn Proudlove, Manager of Policy Research at the North Carolina Clean Energy Technology Center, discussed key findings from the most recent edition of her organization’s quarterly report on the 50 States of Grid Modernization. Steven Hauser, CEO of the GridWise Alliance, discussed conclusions from the fourth annual Grid Modernization Index, which “assesses and ranks all 50 states and the District of Columbia based upon the degree to which they are moving toward a modernized electric grid.”

  • Real Time Voltage Stability Assessment, Monitoring and Control in the New Environment - March 6, 2018, 2 p.m. EST - A PSERC webinar providing a brief overview of power system voltage stability that includes both short-term and long-term aspects. This talk will present ways to quantify short-term as well long-term voltage stability in real time. For short-term, PMU based model free approach is presented. For long-term, reactive power reserves in the system are related to voltage stability via local linear regression.   • A recently-commissioned energy storage project in New England April 27, 2017, 2-3:30 pm EDT. The Sterling (MA) Municipal Light Department’s 2-megawatt/3.9 megawatt-hour battery storage system can isolate from the main grid in the event of a power outage and, with an existing PV array, provide up to 12 days of emergency backup power to the town’s police department and emergency dispatch services.
