GIS Capacity Building Project: Annual Highlights Reports
Each year, the GIS Highlights Report showcases a few maps from the current cohort of health departments participating in the GIS Capacity Building Program. The maps demonstrate how GIS is being used for the surveillance, prevention, and treatment of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic diseases.

The GIS Capacity Building Project:
- Focuses on the use of GIS to:
- Document geographic disparities in chronic diseases.
- Inform chronic disease policies and program development.
- Enhance partnerships with external agencies.
- Facilitate collaboration among chronic disease units within a health department.
- Uses multiple instructional methods to meet the needs of public health professionals across the nation. Instructional platforms include GIS webinars and intensive in-person training.
