Public Health and Health Care Collaboration: The Workforce Perspective

DSEPD’s workforce activities support public health and health care collaboration, which can be fostered by:

  • Practical tools to support integration
  • Educating the next generation of the public health and healthcare workforce in a shared vision of population health
  • Training the current public health and healthcare workforce regarding the need to work together and how to work with each other toward the common goal of population health
  • Strategic coordination among partners with activities in this arena

The 2012 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Primary Care and Public Health: Exploring Integration to Improve Population HealthExternal, identifies a set of core principles derived from successful integration efforts — including a common goal of improving population health, as well as involving the community in defining and addressing its needs. The principles provided in this report can serve as a roadmap to move the nation toward a more efficient health system.
