National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program
About
The National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program (NCGMP) is the primary source of funds for the production of geologic maps in the United States and provides accurate geologic maps and three-dimensional framework models that help to sustain and improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the Nation and to mitigate natural hazards.
The mission of NCGMP is to characterize, interpret, and disseminate a national geologic framework model of the Earth through geologic mapping and associated research in order to support the responsible use of land, water, energy, and minerals and to mitigate the impact of geologic hazards on society, thereby facilitating national security and economic growth through informed resource management.
Mandated by the National Geologic Mapping Act of 1992, in partnership with the Association of American State Geologists (AASG), the NCGMP represents over two decades of successful cooperation among Federal (FEDMAP), State (STATEMAP), and university (EDMAP) partners to deliver digital geologic maps to customers via the National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB).
State (STATEMAP) and Education (EDMAP) funds are distributed through annual competitive grants programs that require matching funds from the applying States or universities. Federal (FEDMAP) funds also are distributed through a review process that includes a Program Council and external stakeholders such as other Federal agencies and the American Association for State Geologists (AASG).
