Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop

The Bioenergy Technologies Office’s (BETO’s) Demonstration and Deployment Strategy Workshop, held in March 2014 at Argonne National Laboratory, looked at ways to expedite the market readiness of promising new technologies for advanced biofuels. Participants from industry, academia, national laboratories, government, and non-governmental organizations worked in parallel sessions focused on feedstocks, products, biochemical conversion, and thermochemical conversion (two sessions).

Each group identified the technical and economic barriers to demonstration and deployment—then identified and prioritized activities to overcome the top barriers. Recurring themes across the groups include the following:

D&D Workshop Report cover.- Creation of advanced test facilities
- Improved feedstock handling equipment
- Strategies to improve biorefinery economics
- Partnering to close gaps in expertise.

Industry input obtained through the workshop could speed up the market entry of new technologies for sustainably converting biomass into fuels that can be used in existing vehicles. The information generated at the workshop is summarized in the new report, which will be a useful resource for the BETO Demonstration and Deployment Team as it develops strategic plans and priorities.
