Fiscal Year 2017 EERE Budget Request

The Fiscal Year 2017 budget request of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) continues to support the government's role in research, solutions, and alternatives to address the nation's most important energy, environmental, and economic challenges. EERE's $2.9 billion request helps fulfill the U.S. pledge to double federal clean energy research and development investments government-wide over the next five years, including $2.1 billion for Mission Innovation, an initiative signed by 20 countries to accelerate worldwide clean energy innovation and cost reduction. The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) conducts research, development, demonstration, and deployment activities in partnership with industry to advance a diverse portfolio of energy efficiency and clean power technologies and practices that will decrease our nation’s energy dependence and accelerate development of clean electricity supply options.

The FY 2017 budget request continues to support a critical and appropriate government role in research, solutions, and alternatives that will enable address of the nation’s most important energy, environmental, and economic challenges. And it takes a significant first step toward fulfilling the U.S. pledge to seek to double federal clean energy research and development investments government-wide over the next five years as part of Mission Innovation, an initiative launched by the U.S. and 19 other countries to accelerate widespread clean energy technology innovation and cost reduction.

The EERE's FY 2017 budget request of $2.9 billion includes $2.1 billion for the support of Mission Innovation, an increase of $702 million from the enacted FY 2016 budget. These investments will accelerate and drive next order innovation essential for emergent economic growth, clean, affordable, and reliable energy, and energy security.
