National Quitline Data Warehouse

The National Quitline Data Warehouse (NQDW) was established to assist in the evaluation of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded State and territorial quitlines and to provide a resource to states for ongoing tobacco control program evaluation and improvement.

Quitlines - Woman on phone

Quitline services in all U.S. states can be accessed through a toll-free national portal number provided by the National Cancer Institute at 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669). Callers can access additional, language-specific quitline services via 1-855-DÉJELO-YA for service in Spanish (1-855-335-3569), 1-800-838-8917 for service in Mandarin or Cantonese, 1-800-556-5564 for service in Korean, and 1-800-778-8440 for service in Vietnamese.

The NQDW collects data on services offered by state quitlines, such as hours of operation, available languages, criteria for receiving quitline counseling or free cessation medications, and amount of counseling and free medications offered to quitline callers. The NQDW also collects data on the number of calls received by state quitlines, the number of callers served by state quitlines and, in some cases, the types of services callers received. The NQDW collects individual-level, de-identified information on quitline callers, such as caller demographics, tobacco-use behaviors, how callers heard about the quitline, reason for calling, insurance type and status, pregnancy status, primary language of service, and mental health status.

All 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the national Asian Smokers’ Quitline participate in and provide data to the NQDW. This consists of responding to the NQDW Quarterly Quitline Services Survey and providing de-identified quitline caller intake information to the NQDW. All U.S. states, territories, and quitlines participating in the NQDW currently respond to the NQDW Quarterly Services Survey. Presently, 49 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Asian Smokers’ Quitline provide de-identified quitline caller intake information to the NQDW1.

NQDW data are used to:

  • Demonstrate the role quitlines play in promoting tobacco use cessation
  • Measure the number of tobacco users being served by state quitlines
  • Improve quitline operations, service quality, and access
